The Mission Advancement unit of the LCMS works closely with Synod’s Communications unit to support the mission and ministry efforts of the Office of National Mission, the Office of International Mission, and Pastoral Education which all report to the Chief Mission Officer. The Chief Mission Officer, on behalf of the President, shall supervise fundraising activity of the national office according to the policies established by the Board of Directors of the Synod.
Reporting Relationships
- Reports to Director of Member Engagement, LCMS Mission Advancement.
- Relates to customers, including donors and income recipients, LCMS staff and staff of other LCMS ministries and organizations.
Essential Job Functions
- Assists in the planning, scheduling and management of Synod, Inc.’s comprehensive mass marketing and donor engagement strategies.
- Maintains an expert-level knowledge of the policies, processes, and procedures of each in-unit team (Database Integrity, Gift Operations, Database Administration and Marketing/Communications).
- Maintains an expert-level knowledge of end-to-end CRM system operations (from identifying donor segments, entering gifts and fielding contributor responses, reporting and further donor cultivation).
- Performs list generation processes for mass mailings, e-mailings and calling programs to a variety of audiences — typically annual fund contributors, sustaining contributors, first-time contributors, and congregations.
- Collaborates with multiple units and offices (I.e., Synod Communications, Office of the President, etc.), as well as external partners to ensure timely project completion.
- Acts as Mission Advancement liaison for budget reports on the Office of International Mission’s field projects.
- Serves as co-administrator of the mission.advancement@lcms.org email inbox.
- Runs regular reports on mass marketing effort performance.
- Tests predictive modeling data every two months prior to donor score refresh.
- Coordinates the new donor and lapsed reactivation processes and research.
- Distributes bequest information for various LCMS ministries, programs, and designations.
- Maintains all LCMS.org giving pages and a comprehensive list of the pages.
- Provides back-up support to each in-unit team and functional area as needed.
Education and Experience
- A minimum of a bachelor’s degree in communications, marketing, business administration or a related field; master’s related to nonprofit leadership or business administration is preferred.
- 3-5 years of experience in an office setting; experience in a non-profit setting is preferred.
- Individuals with CFRE credentials, or the willingness/desire to pursue the credential is preferred.
Knowledge, Skills and Abilities
- Ability to assist in managing robust, intricate donor communications plans each year, envisioning how different projects interact or counteract.
- Ability to achieve mastery in basic unit functions, including gift entry, database integrity, donor communications.
- Ability to remain calm and respond appropriately in stressful situations, public speaking skills highly desired.
- Ability and willingness to interact frequently with constituents in a wide array of emotional states (non-donors/prospective donors, current donors, and other stakeholders)
- Ability to seek out efficiency and process improvements.
- Has a working knowledge of donor care best practices and the characteristics of a high performing team.
- Ability to work well with other staff members and collaborate with other departments.
- Willingness and ability to travel infrequently for business meetings (some overnights), preferred.
- Possesses a “can do” attitude.
- Is flexible, agile, willing, and able to wear a variety of hats.
- Upholds commitment to excellent customer (donor) service.
