Friends of the Everglades was founded in 1969 by renowned journalist, author, and environmental activist Marjory Stoneman Douglas. We are a 501(c)(3) nonprofit organization dedicated to preserving America’s Everglades and its interconnected ecosystems.

WHAT WE DO
The mission of Friends of the Everglades is to preserve, protect, and restore the only Everglades in the world.
Our Goals:
- Compel government agencies to comply with existing environmental laws, and resist any efforts to weaken such laws.
- Encourage politicians to recognize the long consequences of their actions.
- Spread awareness of the importance of the Everglades to the South Florida ecosystem.
POSITION SUMMARY
Friends of the Everglades is seeking a well-informed Science & Policy Analyst to apply scientific knowledge and consensus to the development of policies for the preservation, protection and restoration of the Everglades. Additionally, the Science & Policy Analyst will consider the ethical and political dimensions on how science can best preserve, protect and restore the Everglades.
The Science & Policy Analyst will work with scientists, engineers, and other analysts and stakeholders in federal, state, local and tribal governments, as well as allied environmental organizations. The Analyst will report to the Policy Director and will have the opportunity to collaborate closely with science advisors to Friends of the Everglades.
To ensure success, the Science & Policy Analyst should possess specialized knowledge and a firm grasp on the factual and scientific predicates related to policy development. The ideal candidate will provide direction and advice that ultimately contribute to positive changes within the organization and to Everglades preservation, protection and restoration.
QUALIFICATIONS/EDUCATION/EXPERIENCE
- A bachelor’s degree in a field of physical or biological science or engineering and a master’s degree in an environmental policy-related field, OR
- A bachelor’s degree in environmental policy and a master's degree in a science-related field.
- A Ph.D. is preferable, but not required.
- Experience in determining if policies align with objectives.
- Familiarity with Everglades issues is preferred.
- Excellent communication skills. Must be comfortable talking to a range of personalities and people, comfortable with public speaking, and able to communicate scientific information to a range of audiences.
- Advanced ability to recommend new policies or amendments and prepare draft versions.
- Ability to collaborate with internal and external stakeholders.
- Experience in preparing reports and presenting findings.
- Excellent record-keeping skills.
- Florida residency required.
ESSENTIAL RESPONSIBILITIES
- Evaluating scientific evidence used to inform policy decisions related to the protection, preservation and restoration of the Everglades.
- Determining if proposed policies are aligned with the goals and objectives of the Friends of the Everglades.
- Consulting with scientific experts on the Everglades to ensure inclusion of relevant information in any evaluations.
- Building consensus with stakeholders on policies related to the protection, preservation and restoration of the Everglades.
- Communicating relevant scientific information to non-scientists, especially to decision-leaders and stakeholders.
- Reporting on findings and proposing new policies or amendments to existing policies.
- Contributing to grant writing and reporting.
SCHEDULE/HOURS
Full-time, approximately 40 hours weekly during normal business hours, some evenings and weekends required.
COMPENSATION AND BENEFITS
Annual salary is negotiable based on experience. Benefits include health, vision, and dental insurance; 401K retirement plan; 20 days PTO annually, plus 13 paid holidays and the week of July 4 off. A work computer is provided, and work-related travel expenses are reimbursed.
