Transportation Duties:
Job Summary:
The bus driver is responsible for training drivers and aides, assisting with route development and efficiency evaluation, promoting high safety standards, ensuring proper use of child restraints, assigning coverage, maintaining the department schedule, and communicating driver and aide performance to the Supervisor and/or Coordinator of Transportation. This role requires strong managerial skills to independently train drivers and aides and interact with supervisors, school districts, and outside contractors. The primary goal is to provide safe, efficient, and orderly transportation for students.
Essential Functions
- Safely drive a school bus to pick up and transport children to and from school according to prescribed routes and assigned schedules.
- Provide transportation for field trips and other school-sponsored activities as assigned.
- Adhere to safety rules when loading and unloading children.
- Assist students with disabilities or those in need of help to ensure they safely get on and off the vehicle.
- Ensure proper handling and securing of students’ medical equipment and wheelchairs.
- Assist students in and out of car seats when necessary.
Regulatory Compliance:
- Comply with federal, state, local, and district laws, regulations, and policies.
- Follow all posted speed limits and safe driving practices.
- Maintain discipline using appropriate techniques and report student misconduct to the proper authority.
- Maintain confidentiality of all district information.
Documentation and Reporting:
- Keep an up-to-date route schedule, student roster, student counts, and mileage reports.
- Keep the route schedule and student roster in the vehicle while it is being operated.
- Maintain an up-to-date emergency information sheet for each student in the vehicle.
- Timely submit required documentation or reports, including the number of passengers or trips, hours worked, mileage, fuel consumption, or fares received.
- Transport only authorized passengers and discharge passengers only at authorized stops.
- Physically check the bus at the end of each route to ensure no children remain in the vehicle.
Vehicle Maintenance:
- Maintain a good relationship with students, their parents/guardians, bus aides and monitors, and district transportation personnel.
- Regularly inspect and care for the vehicle, reporting necessary repairs and preventative maintenance, tire replacement, light replacement, etc.
- Keep the interior and exterior of the bus clean at all times by washing or polishing as needed.
- Install chains on the bus when weather conditions warrant.
Safety and Incident Reporting:
- Observe all mandatory safety regulations for school buses.
- Immediately report malfunctioning equipment while en route to and from school to designated personnel.
- Report lateness due to mechanical failure or other reasons to the proper authority.
- Report any accident, regardless of severity, with complete information, including the names of all pupils riding on the bus at the time of the accident.
- Enforce regulations against smoking and eating on the bus.
Training and Credentials:
- Attend training for school bus drivers as directed and as required by law.
- Maintain all required credentials and comply with all legal requirements to perform as a school bus driver.
- Conduct required school bus evacuation and other safety drills as directed.
- Carry required documentation at all times while performing this work, including a valid CDL license with an “S” endorsement, a valid school bus endorsement card, and a valid physician’s certificate.
- Maintain knowledge of first-aid procedures.
