Under the direct supervision of the Chief Operations Officer (COO), the Bus Drivers Supervisor works to assure the overall performance of Sunset Empire Transportation District (SETD) operations. The Bus Drivers Supervisor is responsible for and manages the driver training program, including new driver training and follow-up training as needed. Must work closely with the COO to ensure new driving training, on-going training and training records are completed in a timely manner. The Bus Drivers Supervisor sits on the interview panel for new driver hires; supervises and manages driver function with assistance from the COO. The Bus Drivers Supervisor manages the customer feedback and complaint process. The Bus Drivers Supervisor must demonstrate good judgment, protect and maintain confidential information and meet strict deadlines. Must be able to handle confrontational or stressful situations and work effectively with other employees, the public, and vendors. The Bus Driver Supervisor fosters an overall positive atmosphere within the District. This position is a safety sensitive position and requires you to do a pre-employment drug test and random testing for drug/and or alcohol.
ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS
- Oversees and ensures that all District drivers meet District performance and productivity standards.
- Supervises drivers weekly work schedules; dispatches and or drives/whenever necessary.
- Perform regular assessment of routes to determine effectiveness, viability and level of service.
- Monitors, motivates, trains and recommends evaluations of employee performance, including ensuring that employees are trained to safely operate District equipment.
- Develops, maintains and administers a structured, driver training and retraining program. Ensure driver training records are current and complete.
- Creates and distributes rider alert notifications.
- Ensures drivers exhibit the highest level of customer service, helpfulness and friendliness with riders and others.
- Manages a customer feedback and complaint process, maintaining a log and addressing concerns that are raised. Recommends discipline when necessary and uses coaching log to inform topics for driver training program.
- Operates a two-way radio, using proper radio communication procedures in compliance with District and Federal Communications Commission Standards. Coordinate with the drivers while they are on route via the radios.
- Monitors Bus Drivers proper use of District two-way radio.
- Promotes a culture of safety.
- Regular scheduling of time in the field to observe driver adherence to laws, rules and policy.
- Maintains an active coaching log for each driver.
- Serves as responder to accident/incident sites and determines post-accident testing as needed. Ensures drivers complete all accident/incident paperwork in a timely and accurate manner.
- Report Drug and Alcohol problems to COO and District DER (HR Manager).
- Fosters a collaborative relationship with union representatives.
- Works with the Maintenance supervisor to ensure all vehicles are safe and all vehicle systems are operational.
- Assist in emptying vaults as needed
- Assist COO when needed.
- Other duties as required.
MANDATORY QUALIFICATIONS
- Education-High School Diploma or GED, or equivalent.
- Two years previous driving experience, operating public transportation vehicles.
- Certifications needed: Class B Commercial Driver’s License with airbrakes and passenger endorsement, DOT Medical Examiners Certificate, Defensive Driving Certificate, and PASS certification.
- CPR and First Aid certification.
- Driving record that demonstrates adherence to safety in the operation of motor vehicles and adherence to traffic laws and regulations.
- Ability to lift 50 lbs.
- Must be 21 years of age.
SPECIFIC JOB SKILLS
- Ability to communicate orally and in writing, with employees and the public at the level necessary to perform the duties of this position.
- Working knowledge of customer service techniques and demonstrated ability to be empathetic and cognizant of the needs of senior and disabled residents/customers.
- Possession of critical thinking and analysis skills to analyze problems and resolve them diplomatically, professionally and quickly.
- Ability to maintain positive relationships with all staff and maintain a positive work atmosphere.
- Ability to organize, lead and motivate employees.
- Ability to adapt to change and make decisions in stressful situations.
- Ability to troubleshoot and find appropriate solutions.
DESIRED QUALIFICATIONS
- Knowledge and experience of transit scheduling software.
- Proficient bilingual Spanish speaking skills preferred.
WORKING CONDITIONS
- This is a safety/security sensitive position and requires pre-employment and random drug testing mandated by the Federal Transit Administration.
- Work is performed in field and office environment, which will require occasional bending, hearing, voice, conversation, keyboarding, lifting to 50 pounds, pushing, reaching and walking. Drive and sitting 8-10 hours in a day may occasionally be required.
