The State Highway Administration's (MDOT SHA) District 5 – Anne Arundel County is currently recruiting for two (2) Mechanic (Heavy Equipment Maintenance Technician II) positions. The eligible list produced from this recruitment will be utilized to fill HEMT II vacancies within SHA in the specified county only.

Nature of Work: This position will perform the repair and maintenance work of motor vehicles, heavy equipment, power tools that are utilized by the maintenance shop to perform routine and emergency maintenance of SHA highways, bridges, and right of way areas. This position is responsible for performing journey level of mechanical repairs, diagnosing various system malfunctions, standard preventive maintenance services and assisting with major automotive repairs.

MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS:
Education: Graduation from a standard high school or possession of a high school equivalency certificate.
Experience: Three (3) years of experience servicing, maintaining and repairing motor vehicles, gasoline and/or diesel engines, or heavy-duty construction equipment. One year of the required experience must include servicing and repairing heavy duty construction equipment and diesel engines.
Notes:
1. Applicants may substitute additional documented and relevant experience repairing, servicing and maintaining automobiles, trucks, buses or comparable equipment on a year-for-year basis for the required education.
2. Completion of an accredited training program for Heavy Equipment or Diesel Repair may be substituted for one and one-half years of the general experience. The accrediting body for the training program must be listed on the U.S. Department of Education's Database of Accredited Postsecondary Institutions and Programs.
3. U.S. Armed Forces military service experience as defined under the Minimum Qualifications may be substituted on a year-for-year basis for the required education and experience.
4. Certification as a Technician by the National Institute for Automotive Service Excellence (ASE) can be substituted for two years of the required education. (The two years of experience used to qualify for ASE testing is considered an integral part of this substitution and cannot also be considered separately to meet Education or Experience Minimum Qualifications.)
5. Certification as a Master Technician in one or more subject areas by the National Institute for Automotive Service Excellence (ASE) can be substituted for the required education.
1. Employees are assigned duties that require the operation of motor vehicles. Employees must possess and maintain a Class C motor vehicle operator's license valid in the State of Maryland.
2. Employees are required to possess and maintain a Class A or B Commercial Driver's License (CDL) valid in the State of Maryland during the probationary period, depending on the type of equipment operated.
3. Employees in this class may be required to obtain Special Commercial Driver's License Endorsements for Hazardous Materials and Tank Vehicles depending on the type of equipment operated.
4. Employees must satisfy the first level of the employing administration's certification program during the probationary period. Failure to satisfy the first level of qualifications within the stated time will be considered grounds for dismissal.
