Early Childhood Education and Assistance Program
Nurse Consultant - Contract
The duties of the contracted Nurse Consultant are to provide the Early Childhood Education and Assistance Program providing overall directions for health services and ensure identification of health concerns of individual children. Works in an interdisciplinary approach with site team to achieve program standards in the health/nutrition component.
PRIMARY RESPONSBILITIES:
1. Health Coordination: Reviews and assesses child health records including child health plans, Health & Developmental History forms and well child exams, identifying areas of concern that need follow up or referral. Consults with staff and/or families when special health or nutrition concerns arise. Explains implications of specific health conditions to staff and assist in planning for accommodations to meet the child’s health needs.
2. Screening Supervision: Assist staff with growth, hearing, and vision screenings and referrals, if needed. Evaluates and interprets screening results for staff and families making suggestions for follow up and referrals.
3. Immunization Compliance: Reviews immunization records and identifies immunization compliance as required by state law, along with completion of the Annual State Immunization Report.
4. Health Consultation: Attends interdisciplinary team planning meetings and provides feedback and consultation on health issues for specific children, based upon needs, as requested.
5. Medication Supervision: Reviews classroom medication needs and provides child specific medication training to site staff.
6. Provider Referral and Resource Identification: Assist staff to locate and identify health/nutrition resources and providers.
7. Professional Development: Participates in PSESD in-service nurse training twice a year and other educational opportunities to gain knowledge of program requirements.
MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS:
1. Current Washington State Registered Nurse license and one-year related nursing experience.
2. Experience working with preschool age children, low-income, and multicultural families is preferred.
3. Must successfully pass a Washington State criminal background and medical check.
KNOWLEDGE, SKILLS, AND ABILITIES
1. Experience in community health, school nursing, and/or early childhood education.
2. Competence in planning, organizing, scheduling, recordkeeping, and oral & written communication.
3. Ability to relate effectively with children, families, community members, and staff from diverse backgrounds.
4. Knowledge of Head Start and ECEAP program requirements.
HOURS:
1. Not to exceed an average of twenty hours per month during school year without prior approval of Early Learning Director. Hours fluctuate with more hours required in the Fall and Spring.
COMPENSATION:
Compensation for hours performed completing the above-listed responsibilities will be paid at $50.00 per hour. The contractor will invoice KYFS for the work performed at least monthly. Mileage traveling between sites in the performance of the contract will be reimbursed at the current Federal rate, not to exceed $400 annually without prior approval.
