Orchard Operations
Nature of Work:
The orchard operations assistantassists the orchard managers with a variety of orchard operations while maintaining our goal of producing high quality fruit for others to enjoy. The Orchard Operations Assistant reports to the Orchard Manager or under the supervision of the Assistant Orchard Manager.
Job Essentials and Physical Demands:
· Able to communicate effectively utilizing the English language well enough to perform the essential duties of the job
· Able to ascend and descend stairs and ladders without assistance
· Possess the ability to differentiate colors
· Possess basic math skills to perform the required tasks
· Possess the dexterity and strength to use the required tools and machinery to accomplish the tasks of this position
· Able to hear with or without amplification devices
· Able to lift 50 pounds, and repetitive lifting of lesser amounts.
· Must be able to walk, stand, crouch, climb, use hands and fingers, reach, sit, talk, and see to perform full range of farm tasks
· Must be at least 18 years old
Job Duties and Competencies; Availability
· Demonstrate self-motivation, dependability, attention to detail, and ability to follow instructions and perform responsibilities of position with limited supervision
· Treat others courteously with respect and dignity; maintain a strong working relationship with orchard staff and other employees.
· Passionate about growing quality, healthy food.
· Assist with harvest logistics, hauling, and forklift operation.
· Operate orchard equipment like tractors, mowers, tillage equipment, and skidloader
· Operate sprayer equipment for nutrient and pest management sprays. Acquire and maintain a private pesticide applicator license.
· Assist orchard crew with pruning, thinning, harvesting and a variety of orchard tasks as needed
· Demonstrate ongoing willingness to learn and to gain knowledge and expertise in general orchard care, regenerative land management, and perennial food production systems.
· Assist managers during apple packing operations.
· Observe company safety standards as directed.
· Follow company policies and procedures as outlined in the company employee handbook
· Available for FT work Monday through Friday. Occasional Saturday hours required from April-October. Normal work hours are 7:00 AM to 5:00 PM but may vary by the season.
· Perform related work as assigned.
Education and Experience:
Essential to have:
· HS Diploma/GED
· Valid PA driver's license
Desirable to have (will train):
· Forklift operator certification
· Pesticide applicator license
· Experience operating farm equipment
· Experience growing fruits and vegetables
Working Conditions:
Work is conducted mostly outdoors in temperature extremes and all types of weather. Apple packing and equipment operation may be moderately loud. This position is exposed to chemical hazards.
Supervisory Responsibilities:
This position has no supervisory responsibilities.
Job Type: Full-time
Pay: $16.00 - $18.00 per hour
Expected hours: 40 – 45 per week
