The Role
The Director of Security is a critical Black Veterans for Social Justice, Inc. (the
“Agency”) team member. The Director of Security will administer and maintain policies
and primarily ensure the safety and security of people, property, and assets. The
Director of Security will manage and oversee security operations at the Agency’s
shelter, including reviewing, training, and vetting security guards hired by the Agency,
whether directly or through subcontractors. When needed, the Director of Security shall
provide training for outside security guards geared toward BVSJ’s specific needs and
shall liaise with outside security management and supervisory staff to ensure BVSJ’S
security needs are being addressed. This position will conduct all investigations into
severe complaints and allegations, ensuring that all complaints, misconduct, allegations,
and incidents are thoroughly investigated, documented, and appropriately resolved
across Shelter Operations. In this role, all investigative actions shall be fully and
accurately documented, including written documentation of pertinent meetings and
approval by BVSJ’s executive staff of any final decisions, actions, or resolutions.
Main Job Tasks, Duties, and Responsibilities
- Maintain full accountability for managing all aspects of Shelter Operations, day-today safety, and security activities per organizational goals and objectives.
- Knowledge of and enforcing the Operations Department standard operating
procedures at each Shelter Site.
- Supervise directors of compliance and operations managers and perform quality
assurance reviews.
- Ensure accurate recording of complaints, assess investigative techniques used, and
review investigative documentation.
- Conduct Shelter Operations site inspections on various shifts, and investigate and
report any department, site, or organizational policy violations.
- Inspect the Shelter facilities for security breaches, fire, and safety hazards.
- Oversee fire drills for all Sites and conduct in-house safety training and meetings for
all Shelter Operations employees.
- Conduct regular audits and inspections to assess and mitigate security
vulnerabilities.
- Maintain appropriate internal procedures to ensure senior management is aware of
the levels of control to comply with all local laws.
- Collaborate with BVSJ Executive leadership monthly and with human resources and
Shelter operations directors periodically to review complaints, allegations of
misconduct, shelter incidents, investigation of these events, and the outcomes of
these investigations.
- Understand Site operations bed management, reporting to oversight bodies, and
completion of incident reports.
- Perform any other duties as assigned by Executive Leadership.
Qualifications
- Bachelor’s Degree in a related field with four years of experience successfully
managing multiple locations.
- An associate degree in a related field with six years of experience in servicing the
homeless or similar populations.
- F – 80, and CPR/First Aid certification
- Knowledge of ethics and security program elements, principles and practices,
privacy, security, and internal controls.
- Knowledge of NYC, State, and Federal laws and regulations that affect the provision
of not-for-profit services.
