Library Technician
General Position Summary:
ZAI has openings for Library Technicians to work on a short-term shifting project at the National Library of Medicine in Bethesda, MD. Library Technicians will perform complex non-professional manual duties to move, shift, and reshelve unique collections using the NLM classification system. This is an active position working on multiple floors in the Library’s book stacks.
- Job Type: Temporary Full-Time (6 - 8 Months)This position is performed 100% onsite.
- Hourly Rate: $24.07/ $50,065.00 plus $4.57
Essential Job Functions:
- This position maintains the library’s unique collection by moving, shifting, and reshelving library materials and maintaining all materials in neat and precise order
- Removes specified library materials and loads them on book trucks in proper order.
- Transports materials on book trucks between floors to designated stack locations
- Shifts materials in shelving stacks to make space for new additions, following complex shifting plans.
- Interfiles library materials, following the NLM classification system.
- Shelf-reads and straightens materials on the shelves or in the collection while reshelving following the NLM classification system.
- Ensures materials are maintained during the process, i.e., the appearance, neatness, and order of the volumes are not altered or degraded during the shifting process.
- Performs other duties as assigned.
Knowledge, Skills and Abilities:
- Ability to follow detailed directions.
- Previous experience moving and shelving library and/or book materials
- General knowledge of commonly used practices, and procedures in handling unique collection materials.
- Experience with and understanding of classification systems used in libraries
- Experience maintaining library collections in the correct order according to classification systems
- Ability to perform a high volume of work with accuracy and attention to detail
- Ability to plan and organize workload effectively.
- Ability to work independently, set priorities, and follow general protocols and procedures
- Ability to accept supervision and correction.
Requirements:
- High School Diploma or GED equivalent; Associate or B.A./B.S. degree preferred
- Minimum 1-year experience in a library handling library materials or equivalent experience in a library support position.
- Ability to lift and carry library materials weighing up to 50 lbs.
- Ability to work in physically demanding conditions, such as standing, stooping, bending, or walking for extended periods of time, climbing ladders, or pushing carts laden with supplies or library materials
