SUMMARY:
The Family Practice Physician provides primary and urgent patient care in the ambulatory clinic setting. The provider sees all age groups, instituting appropriate diagnosis, treatment, follow-up, and referral for consultations when indicated. This position is an integral part of the health care team, which includes other Physicians, Podiatrists, Mid-level Practitioners, Registered Nurses, Licensed Vocational Nurses, Medical Assistants, Medical Receptionists, Pharmacy personnel, and Laboratory personnel, and members of the Dental, Outreach, Community Health Nursing, Behavioral Health Services, and Social Service Departments.
Duties of this position shall include, but are not limited to the following:
1. Functions independently to perform age-appropriate history and physical assessments for children and adults. Demonstrates competence for all specialized procedures for which privileging is requested. Operates within the scope of practice as delineated in their clinical privileges. Appropriately documents all care and procedures in the medical records.
2. Appropriately interprets patient historical, physical examination, and diagnostic and therapeutic test data to arrive at an accurate diagnosis. Orders laboratory and radiology studies when necessary to confirm diagnosis, or to rule out other differential diagnoses. Appropriately documents all findings in the medical record. Consults with a physician, nurse practitioner, or other appropriate member of the health care team when necessary.
3. Prescribes appropriate pharmacologic and non-pharmacologic treatment modalities to treat the patient’s condition. Utilizes medication formulary for pharmacological options. Orders appropriate follow-up for patient to assess results of treatment. Refers patient when necessary for treatments not available from RSBCIHI. Appropriately documents all plans and orders in the medical record.
4. Monitors the effectiveness of interventions. Collaborates with multidisciplinary team members by making appropriate referrals.
5. Implements the RSBCIHI health care objectives to include primary care, health promotion, and disease prevention through routine care of patients.
6. Adheres to insurance company requirements to ensure appropriate reimbursement for services rendered.
7. Has an awareness and appreciation for the diversity of Native American cultural and spiritual values and recognizes how these values affect our interactions with Native Americans in the medical setting.
8. Functions as an effective member of the health care team, which includes physicians, nursing, clerical, pharmacy, and laboratory staff. Effectively communicates and collaborates with all team members to provide both efficient and high quality care to our patients. Sets the pace for efficient patient flow through the clinic.
9. Participates in Medical Department staff meetings and clinic site meetings. Implements corrective actions as identified during peer review activities.
10. Delivers patient care in a manner that is thorough and elicits patient compliance within RSBCIHI guidelines:
30 minutes for routine care of patients with chronic illnesses and minor acute problems. Reschedules patients for longer visits when appropriate.
60 minutes for annual preventive health examinations and new patient visits; 30 minutes for disability exams, procedures, acute, and chronic care appointments.
Average 12-18 primary care patient visits per 8-hour shift.
Completes all medication refills and patient care in a timely manner.
Completes and submits the SOAP note encounter documentation within 24 hours of evaluating a patient.
MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS:
Education: M.D. or D.O. degree.
Current California Medical License.
Current DEA license.
Current American Board of Family Medicine certification.
Current CPR certification.
Experience:
Two years of experience in an ambulatory care patient setting desirable.

Work Location: One assigned location; will be asked to rotate to other clinic sites as required for coverage needs.
Physical Demands: Must have excellent physical and emotional health.
The assignment will be carried out in a medical clinic setting. There is frequent exposure to contagious diseases. Walking and standing is frequent for long periods of time. Some sitting and lifting are required. The incumbent will be required to assist patients who are frail or handicapped. Driving will be required between clinics. The position is considered a uniformed service and a dress code is published.
