Licenses, Registration, and Certifications

Denver Water proudly serves high-quality water and promotes its efficient use to 1.5 million people in the City of Denver and many surrounding suburbs. The Denver Water Dam Safety group is part of the Engineering Division and is responsible for the safety, rehabilitation, maintenance, and repairs to 19 State jurisdictional dams, 28 tunnels, and several downstream storage (gravel pit) reservoirs in the Denver Water collection system. Included with these facilities is the dam safety oversight of four dams with hydropower that fall under the Federal Energy Regulatory Commission (FERC) jurisdiction.
Position Summary
Denver Water’s Engineering Division is seeking a qualified candidate to assist our dam safety team as an Associate Engineer, Engineer, or Engineer Senior (depending on the hiring level and candidate's qualifications) under the direction of the Engineering Manager of Dam Safety. The selected candidate will perform a variety of advanced professional-level engineering work of a technical and complex nature related to geotechnical, structural, hydrologic, and/or hydraulic disciplines. Some of the primary duties are visual inspections and preparing/reviewing written reports on select dams or tunnels; assisting the team on dam safety-related actions with Local, State and Federal agencies; coordinating dam safety activities with other Denver Water Divisions; performing various calculations; developing and managing consultant contracts related to Dam Safety analyses and projects; providing dam safety technical and regulatory expertise for remedial measures which includes construction of new facilities and rehabilitation of existing structures; designing, managing, or assisting in management of design and construction projects or procedures involving dams and their appurtenances; and reviewing performance and maintenance records.
Supervisory Responsibilities
This position will not have formal supervisory responsibilities over other employees.
Essential Duties and Responsibilities
Associate Engineer
- Assist with planning studies, project design and maintenance improvements for dam, tunnel, or gravel pit-related projects from conception through construction.
- Analyze routine technical, engineering and operational problems.
- Collect data through field observation/measurement.
- Assist with the preparation of planning studies, contract plans and specifications. Coordinate construction inspection and contract administration.
- Analyze and gather data to assist identifying engineering and planning problems.
- Perform investigations, calculations and sketches necessary to complete planning studies, finished designs and construction specifications on less complex projects.
Engineer (in addition to Engineer Associate)
- Manage and complete planning studies, project design of capital and maintenance improvements for dam, tunnel, or gravel pit related projects from conception through construction.
- Identify and analyze routine and complex technical, engineering and operational problems. Review and perform related studies, calculations and sketches.
- Coordinate and collect data through field observation/measurement, laboratory use, and other forms of research and analyses.
- Review, plan, and perform pricing and costing activities, quantity takeoffs/estimates, assembles, and checks data.
- Review and prepare planning studies, contract plans and specifications. Coordinate construction inspection and contract administration.
- Analyze engineering and planning problems and recommends solutions.
- Perform investigations, calculations and sketches necessary to complete planning studies, finished designs and construction specifications on less complex projects.
- Perform work related to geotechnical, structural, hydrologic, and/or hydraulic disciplines utilizing knowledge of fluid mechanics, statics, and dynamics, engineering mathematics, and engineering materials. Perform analysis on flood routing, open channel flow, riprap design, slope stability, embankment seepage, deformation analysis, seismic hazard assessments, structural and stability analysis of concrete dams and appurtenant structures, reinforced concrete design, mass concrete design, steel design, large scale excavation design, groundwater modeling, dewatering design, rock wedge/block analysis, rock fall mitigation, and soil stabilization.
Engineer Sr. (in addition to Engineer)
- Ability to solve operational problems on projects, and responsible for developing timely design solutions.
- Serve as subject matter expert for the division in the application of advanced theories, concepts, principles, and processes for dam safety-related work.
- Design and coordinate critical engineering projects. Propose and implement documentation and programs to measure, track, monitor, and improve progress.
- Serve as project manager for a variety of engineering projects often in a highly specialized area.
- Monitor field inspections, resolve disputes, and perform contract administration duties.
- Assign and direct work of professional and technical personnel within an assigned unit and provide technical guidance and quality control checks.
- Manage consultants, design contracts, and provide design direction for construction phases of projects.
- Coordinate scope and progress of projects with peers both in and outside the Division.
- Participate in field inspection and contract administration.
- Maintain liaison and represent the department at meetings. Resolve disputes with outside public and private organizational representatives.
- Responsible for coordinating activities across divisions and sections required to complete projects in a timely manner.
- Apply advanced engineering principals on dams and reservoirs, hydroelectric facilities, tunnels, and/or other similar hydraulic structures. Ensure adherence to local codes and standards and with Federal and State regulatory guidelines and standards regarding dam safety compliance, reporting, and design.
