Position: Manager/Bowling and Recreation
Location: Kansas State University, Manhattan, Kansas campus – K-State Student Union, 918 N. Martin Luther King Jr. Drive, Manhattan, Kansas 66506
Summary of Position: Responsible for overseeing all aspects of the Union’s bowling and recreational facility, to include fiscal and staffing management, food and beverage services, and equipment and property maintenance in order to facilitate the fulfillment of the Union’s mission, vision, and goals. This position is responsible for ensuring a quality customer-centric experience, enhancing department profitability, and teaching Kansas State University’s University for Man beginning and intermediate bowling courses.

Work Schedule: Monday through Friday – 9 a.m. to 6 p.m.; will require some nights and weekends
Pay Grade: $47,486-$52,134.60 annually, dependent upon experience
Supervised By: Assistant Director/Retail Services

Key Functions:
Bowling-Specific
30%: Promote, organize, and schedule open and league bowling and special events. Inform league members of requirements. Prepare and distribute announcements of league activities, collect member fees, and distribute tournament prizes.
Inspect alley to ensure equipment is operative, following established safety procedures. Ensure maintenance is performed on all bowling-related equipment, to include pinsetters and automatic scorers. Ensure appropriate and adequate bowling equipment and supplies are on hand.
Teach University for Man (UFM) beginning and intermediate bowling courses throughout the year. Test student’s knowledge and abilities related to the course. Maintain course records and reporting.
Serve as the advisor for the K-State Bowling Club, a department-sponsored student organization.
Recreation-Specific
20%: Oversee current and future recreational facility. Oversee appropriate customer usage of billiard tables, cornhole, and associated equipment. Ensure equipment is well maintained and operative. Coordinate party room reservations and activities.
Food and Beverage-Specific
20%: Ensure all bowling center food, to include Hunt Brothers Pizza, and beverage operations comply with U.S. Food and Drug Administration (FDA) regulations. Establish and monitor a clean and safe work environment in accordance with established health and safety standards. Monitor food quality. Ensure all food service standards and audits are met. Follow up on inspection findings and implement necessary changes. Identify and resolve potential safety hazards. Manage food and beverage supplies and complete monthly and year-end inventory reports.
Departmental Operations
30%: Promote an exceptional customer service experience for all bowling and recreation center patrons.
Manage cash register activities to ensure the accuracy of transactions and accountability of funds. Follow documented procedures to perform opening and closing of cash register.
Maintain complete inventory of bowling and billiard-related accessories/equipment, food and beverage, and other supplies. Order supplies as necessary and within budget. Ensure fiscal responsibility and accountability through coordination, preparation, and management of annual unit budget.
Research best practices, trends, innovative ideas and marketing of the bowling and recreation center. Coordinate bowling and recreation media exposure and marketing plan by working with the Union marketing department.
Hire, train, supervise, and assess performance of department employees. Coordinate overall work flow for unit. Research, analyze, and report on special projects as directed. Serve as a member of Union’s leadership council as well as internal and external committees. Remain current and competent by developing professional contacts with colleagues and seeking out professional development opportunities. Perform other duties as assigned and instructed.
Qualification Requirements:
Education – Minimum
· High school diploma (or equivalent) and five or more years of demonstrated experience; or
· Associate’s degree from an accredited institution and three or more years of demonstrated experience; or
· Bachelor’s degree from an accredited institution and one or more years of demonstrated experience.

· Associate’s degree from an accredited institution and three or more years of demonstrated experience; or
· Bachelor’s degree from an accredited institution and one or more years of demonstrated experience.
Experience – Minimum Demonstrated
· Understanding of bowling, bowling equipment and facilities, and recreational activities;
· Progressive fiscal management experience;
· Ability to work evenings and weekends, as necessary;
· Excellent verbal and written communication skills;
· Proficiency with Microsoft Office software and web-based communications (ie. Zoom, Skype, and/or Teams);
· Ability to work cross-functionally and with a wide variety of projects and competing deadlines;
· Customer-centric service;
· Meet qualifications required by the Liquor Control Act and the Club and Drinking Establishment Act.
Experience – Preferred Demonstrated
· Progressive managerial experience working in the recreation field – specific to bowling/billiards.
· Bowling league and tournament organization and management experience.
· Bronze-level certification from the United States Bowling Congress (USBC) (or ability to obtain certificate within 3 months of hire).
· Bowling equipment general maintenance and troubleshooting.
· One or more years of demonstrated work experience in a university and/or student union environment.
· Two or more years of accounting experience.
· Supervisory experience.
· Progressive retail food service and beverage management experience.
· ServSafe certified.
Skills and Abilities
In order to sell, serve or dispense any cereal malt beverage, the Manager/Bowling and Recreation must be at least 18 years of age or older, a citizen of the United States, and not have been convicted of or released from incarceration, probation or parole for, a felony or any other crime involving moral turpitude, drunkenness, DUI, or a violation of the liquor laws of Kansas, any other state, or the United States, as regulated by the Kansas Department of Revenue’s Division of Alcoholic Beverage Control (KSA 41-2701 et seq.). Ability to stand for extended periods of time and move throughout the recreation center. Full range of physical motion and physical agility (ie. bend, stoop, kneel, crouch, crawl, climb, walk and reach overhead) to operate and perform maintenance on bowling equipment and manipulate same. Sight and ability to read printed material with or without vision aids. Verbal and written communication to present, convey and exchange information and ideas accurately and quickly. Physical agility to lift, carry, and/or pull up to 30 pounds. Hearing for average or normal conversations and to receive information. Ability to be exposed to noise extremes. The scope of the job occasionally requires attendance at evening and/or weekend activities.
