NBHHD is seeking an MLT/MT who enjoys interacting with patients and their families. We are a small community where excellent customer service is the driver of all we do.
Required: Graduate of accredited medical laboratory technology program. Minimum AS degree in medical laboratory science or equivalent. Must be certified or eligible for certification by either ASCP, AMT or equivalent.
JOB SUMMARY: Performs blood tests and studies morphology of constituents of blood to obtain data for use in diagnosis and treatment of disease.
ESSENTIAL DUTIES AND RESPONSIBIILITIES:
1. Receives written and verbal orders from physician and nursing staff for routing and special laboratory tests.
2. Obtains laboratory specimens, such as blood, urine, and sputum, directly from the patient, or the wards, using established laboratory techniques.
3. Sets up and adjusts laboratory equipment and apparatus. Performs necessary and routing daily maintenance on equipment and reagents. Verifies and records participation in doing performance checks and calibration according to lab policy and is reviewed by supervisor. Verifies Quality Control procedures and documents as per Lab Policy.
4. Adds reagents or indicator solutions, and prepares specimens for processing to operations according to established procedure.
5. Observes reactions, changes of color, or formulation of precipitates; studies slides using microscope; subjects treated specimens to automatic analyzing equipment to make qualitative and quantitative analyses. Routinely documents and implements corrective action.
6. Submits unusual and abnormal results to pathologist for review, if doctor orders or if technologist thinks there is a need for pathologist review.
7. Internally checks on quality of work. Investigates any results that do not correlate.
8. Confers with the lab manager or lead technologist regarding abnormal results and test discrepancies.
9. Consults with the lab manager or lead technologist regarding quality control problems.
10. Posts results to other hospital departments.
11. Will be required to perform a great variety of laboratory tests and keep abreast of the latest innovations in methods of testing. Performs all test in the department of hematology urinalysis, blood bank, chemistry, microbiology, and immunology. Assist in the maintenance and improvement of the department’s quality control system, to maintain department standards to meet requirement of licensing agent.
12. May be assigned to other duties that the individual is qualified to perform.
13. Always follows established safety procedures.
