Job Summary:
This position is responsible for creating and developing new products or making improvements to existing products. Uses knowledge of industrial design, graphic design, mechanical design, electrical design, and systems engineering to develop products that meet the company’s requirements. Influences the product design architecture to improve the ergonomics, function, and appearance of the products. Will use computer-assisted engineering design software and equipment to perform assignments. Relies on extensive experience and judgment to plan and accomplish goals and complicated tasks. Can work independently to accomplish project design requirements. A wide degree of creativity and latitude is expected. May lead and direct the work of others.
Essential duties and responsibilities:
- Follow all safety rules and regulations, all work must be done thinking “Safety First”.
- Work in a small, cross-functional project team to design and develop contamination monitoring instruments and accessories.
- Research applications and user requirements to identify key factors to be addressed in the design features. Human interface, ergonomics, environmental impact, manufacturability, serviceability, and cost of ownership are some examples.
- Research and analyze data such as design proposals, specifications, and costs to determine feasibility of design.
- Generate product requirements and functional specifications that drive performance, durability, and reliability for instruments, and subsystems.
- Use systems engineering principles to combine components such as catalog parts, PCBA’s, wire assemblies, electro-mechanical parts, and custom mechanical parts into a cohesive system that functions efficiently and meets the product requirements.
- Work with Project Management to create budgets, schedules, and organize project tasks.
- Provide written protocols, reports, presentations, and perform technical design reviews to solicit feedback on design activities.
- Generate and execute test methods to characterize product performance. Critically examine test results and make design changes or recommendations to the design team.
- Hands-on assembly and testing of instruments to drive proof of concept, prototype, and Beta phase activities.
- Development of mechanical design and manufacturing documentation including: inspection procedures, assembly instructions, manufacturing processes, test methods, purchase specifications, BOMs, and component drawings per the company’s operating procedures.
- Create and maintain Autodesk Inventor CAD models, including assemblies, components, export files, and fabrication drawings within a PDM environment.
- Share knowledge/mentor and/or train other team members with appropriate and applicable expertise during projects as needed.
- For all on -site positions, must show up to work to perform job duties.
- If ever working remote or hybrid model (from home, or offsite location), must be able to travel to LWS office when requested if any company needs arise.

Required Skills/Abilities:
- A passion for solving tough technical problems – Dedicated mechanical intuition and persistence to identify the root cause of a problem, solving problems using best practices.
- Ability to learn rapidly and quickly design creative and practical solutions from rough requirements.
- Ability to think at a systems level, interface between multiple design groups, and negotiate conflicting requirements.
- Proficiency in using CAD to design parts and assemblies and creating specification drawings all within a PDM environment.
- Familiar with in all phases of product development lifecycle including design, implementation, debug, verification, qualification, and design transfer.
- Experience with a variety of fabrication materials and processes including: machining, brake formed sheet metal, injection molding, 3D printing, extrusions, and laser/water cutting.
- Follows policies and procedures. Uses equipment and materials properly. Conserves organizational resources. Supports organization’s goals and values.
- Computer Skills: High level of proficiency with computers. Experience with Microsoft Excel, Word, Outlook, Project, Teams, Engineering design software and Internet usage.
- Communication/Literacy: Able to speak clearly and concisely with others in one-on-one and group situations. Able to read and write at a high level for technical correspondence with customers, vendors, and co-workers.
- Comprehension: Ability to understand complicated designs, concepts, and reports related to product development, production, and serviceability.
- Social Skills: Ability to interact well with others in a friendly manner and not cause conflicts or interrupt workflow.
- Physical Demands: Ability to lift to 40 pounds individually, and 41+ pounds as a multi-person lift.

Supervisory Responsibilities:
- May directly supervise other engineering personnel.

Responsibilities include interviewing, hiring, and training employees; planning, assigning, and directing work; appraising performance; rewarding and disciplining employees; addressing complaints and resolving problems.
Travel:
- May occasionally travel to other LWS US or International locations, or manufacturing suppliers, customer sites, and trade shows.
Education and Experience:
- Bachelor's degree in Mechanical Engineering from a four-year college or university and at least 12 years of experience in a related field, or 17 years related experience and/or training, or equivalent combination of education and experience.
