Program Objective. Kent Community Nursery School (KCNS) provides children with a safe, caring environment for exploration and growth. Learning is play-based with extensive outdoor time. The educational program is designed to foster social, emotional, intellectual, and physical development of each child.
Head Teacher Responsibilities. The Head Teacher is responsible for creating an engaging and safe environment for children that facilitates play-based learning, experimenting, and exploring. The Head Teacher engages with children during the day and collaborates with the other teachers on activities and the daily routine. The Head Teacher also:
- Supports the emotional wellbeing of each child.
- Maintain a play-based approach to learning with extensive outdoor time.
- Diligently monitors children during learning times, mealtimes, and restroom breaks.
- Assumes full responsibility for the children and program.
- Is well-groomed and neatly dressed, bearing in mind the demands of the curriculum.
The 2024-25 KCNS day is from 8:30 AM to 3:30 PM (with a 1:30 PM pick up for our Half Day program) Monday to Friday. Head Teachers may work 3-5 days per week.
Communication Skills. The Head Teacher is expected to communicate with children, parents, counselors, and the KCNS Director and Board. The Head Teacher is to communicate professionally with parents often and directly and be sensitive and open to parent suggestions and questions. The Head Teacher reports to the KCNS Director and Board President.
Head Teacher Qualifications. The Head Teacher must have experience with preschool-age children and enjoy working with children. The position requires either Option 1 or 2 :
Option 1
- An earned Associate's CDA (Child Development Associate) credential issued from the Council for Professional Recognition at least 12 credits in early childhood education or child development from a regionally accredited higher education institution
- AND over not less than a nine (9) month span of time: At least 1,080 hours of documented supervised experience working with children in a program that serves children under the age of 6 years.
Option 2
- A Bachelor's degree in early childhood education or child development from a regionally accredited higher education institution.
- AND At least three hundred and sixty (360) hours of documented supervised experience working with unrelated children under the age of 6 years AND at least one semester of student teaching with children under the age of 6 years.
The Head Teacher requires the above-mentioned credentials, a background check, and CT approved CPR and First Aid Certification by the time the position begins. We can help coordinate a training for this requirement.
Salary. The Head Teacher position starts at $20 per hour.
