Role Overview:
The Nurse Leader is a pivotal role within our veterinary hospital, acting as the right hand to both the Hospital Manager and Doctors. This individual will oversee the nursing team, manage the floor, ensure optimal client flow, and engage with clients to provide empathetic and transparent service. The Nurse Leader will also support the head technician in supervising estimates and invoices and play a crucial role in maintaining inventory and replenishment. Additionally, this role involves being an extra pair of hands during peak times and upholding the company’s core values of transparency and empathy.
Key Responsibilities:
1. Team Supervision and Management:
○ Supervise and lead the nursing team, ensuring high standards of patient care and team efficiency.
○ Create and verify Standard Operating Procedures (SOPs).
○ Train and mentor new veterinary nurses, ensuring they are well-integrated and proficient in their roles.
○ Motivate and engage the nursing team through initiatives provided by the company.
○ Organize the schedule for technicians with the Manager.
2. Client Engagement:
○ Engage with clients to reduce wait times and improve their experience.
○ Ensure the team provides empathetic and transparent service to all clients.
○ Communicate with clients professionally and empathetically, responding to their inquiries about animal health, medications, and treatment plans.
3. Operational Efficiency:
○ Assist in managing the floor, overseeing daily operations to ensure smooth workflows.
○ Supervise the estimation and invoicing processes, in collaboration with the head technician.
4. Inventory Management:
○ Coordinate with the inventory manager to ensure timely replenishment and accurate inventory counts with the help of an assistant.
○ Oversee the pharmacy to ensure no medication shortages.
○ Manage laboratory test supplies to ensure availability for routine and emergency diagnostics.
○ Supervise surgical inventory to ensure all necessary tools and materials are available and properly maintained.
5. Clinical Duties:
○ Assist veterinarians in the examination, diagnosis, and treatment of animals.
○ Administer medications and treatments as prescribed.
○ Perform routine procedures such as wound care and suture removal.
○ Monitor animals during surgeries and provide post-operative care.
○ Ensure proper restraint and handling of animals during exams and procedures.
○ Administer and monitor anesthesia under the direction of veterinarians.
○ Maintain accurate and up-to-date medical records.
6. Laboratory and Diagnostic Procedures:
○ Collect and process laboratory samples, including blood, urine, and tissue.
○ Perform routine diagnostic tests, such as blood chemistry profiles and X-rays.
○ Prepare samples for laboratory analysis and interpret test results.
○ Assist veterinarians in interpreting and communicating diagnostic findings to clients.
7. Medical Equipment and Hospital Environment Management:
○ Operate and maintain veterinary equipment, including X-ray machines, anesthesia machines, endoscopes, ultrasounds, infusion pumps, heaters, dopplers, and multiparameter monitors.
○ Clean, sterilize, and maintain surgical instruments and equipment.
○ Ensure the cleanliness and organization of rooms, cages, and restrooms.
○ Oversee laundry operations to ensure a hygienic environment.
Qualifications:
● Excellent knowledge of animal anatomy, physiology, and common medical conditions.
● Proficiency in performing veterinary technical procedures such as blood draws, catheter placement, and surgical assistance.
● Familiarity with medical terminology, laboratory procedures, and diagnostic imaging.
● Strong verbal and written communication skills for effective client education and team collaboration.
● Ability to multitask, prioritize, and work efficiently in a dynamic environment.
● Ability to delegate and maintain the ICU workflow organized.
● Compassionate and empathetic attitude towards animals and their owners.
● Physical stamina to handle animals of various sizes and potentially lift heavy objects.
● Flexibility to work nights, weekends, and be on-call for emergencies as needed.
● Access to DEA medications and responsibility for ensuring their proper use and storage.
