The Department of General Services' Fleet Management Division is responsible for the overall administration of a fleet of over 5,600 pieces of motorized equipment that are used by 29 City Agencies and entities. Our team of highly-trained diesel, "heavy" truck and car Automotive Lead Technician Mechanics provide scheduled maintenance, repair, inspections and road call services to multiple vehicles. The types of vehicles include "heavy" trucks like fire trucks, snow plows, large trash trucks, Inner Harbor water skimmers, police patrol cars, lawn mowers, and many more. Operations take place at the George L. Winfield Fleet Maintenance Facility (3800 East Biddle Street) and at several substations throughout the City.

A Welder applies heat to metal pieces to melt, fuse and then form a permanent bond. Work of this class involves no supervisory duties or responsibilities. This is a heavy equipment Welder.
Incumbents receive moderate supervision from a technical superior. Employees in this class work a conventional workweek. Work is performed in a repair shop and all designated job sites where there is exposure to welding torches, gases, fumes and dust. Work requires strenuous physical exertion including lifting, bending, stooping and working in awkward positions.
Welds metal parts, using welding equipment as specified by layout, welding diagram or work order.
Positions parts in fixtures on bench or floor, or clamps parts together along layout marks.
Selects torch, torch tip, filler rod and flux according to specifications or type and thickness of metal.
Holds torch at proper angle to metal and guides along weld joint, applying filler rod to molten area to form weld.
Repairs broken or cracked metal objects, fills holes and builds up metal parts.
May clean or degrease parts using wire brush, portable grinder or chemical bath.
Knowledge of how to use a torch for heating, cutting/burning and brazing
General knowledge of MIG, ARC & TIG welding machines; also MIG welding aluminum
Performs related work as required.
KNOWLEDGE SKILLS AND ABILTIES:
Knowledge of the tools, materials and techniques used in welding work.
Knowledge of parts replacement and alignment procedures.
Knowledge of safety practices and procedures.
Ability to read and understand work orders, specifications and blueprints.
Ability to safely use gas and electric arc welding equipment.
Ability to inspect weld for bead size and other specifications.
MINIUM REQUIREMENTS:
Graduation from an accredited high school or possession of a GED certificate and three (3) years of experience in welding work.
Equivalencies - Six months of additional experience in welding work may be substituted for each year of the high school or GED requirement. Completion of one year of the required coursework in a welding curriculum in an accredited high school or vocational school may be substituted for six months of the experience requirement.
