This is the journeyman level of skilled work in preventive maintenance, repair, and rebuilding of gasoline and diesel automotive and heavy public work equipment. Work involves the performance of preventive maintenance, repair work on automobiles, light and heavy duty trucks, tractors, construction equipment, street sweepers, firefighting, police and other related auxiliary equipment. Duties involve all associated mechanical trade tasks. Employees in this class are required to weld, troubleshoot equipment, and secure parts and complete adjustments and repairs autonomously. Work is performed under general supervision and is normally reviewed upon completion through the test driving of equipment, work reports prepared, and through the observation of results obtained.
Education/Experience
- Required - Graduation from standard high school or vocational/technical school; completion of an approved apprenticeship in the automotive mechanic trade; experience at the journeyman level; or any equivalent combination of training and experience that provides the following knowledge, abilities, and skills.
Certificates/Licenses:
- Required- Possession and maintenance of a valid Illinois Class B Commercial Drivers License, with an Air Brake endorsement drivers license. Possession and ownership of all hand tools necessary to perform the required duties. Successful candidate must be ASE certified in A4 Suspension and Steering, A5 Brakes, A6 Electrical/Electronics, T4 Brakes, T5 Suspension and Steering and T6 Electrical /Electronics or have the knowledge and skill to become ASE certified within 12 months of appointment to the position.
