GENERAL SUMMARY OF DUTIES: In your position you are responsible for assisting in the achievement of meeting our standards of excellence for both internal and external customer service and patient care. Your role is to always provide patients, coworkers, physicians, and associates the best professional support and service. Will adhere to corporate confidentiality requirements and will not disclose private or protected health information unless required to do so in an official capacity and/or job description. Participate in quality control and performance improvement activities as determined by federal, state, local and corporate regulations, as directed by Histology Supervisor/Pathology Manager or other GIC Management. The Histology Technician will work under the guidance of the Histology Supervisor/Pathology Manager in preparing slides for histologic exam and diagnosis, along with performing routine H & E stains and other special stains. Maintains various levels of technical competencies and theoretical knowledge. He/she reports to the Histology Supervisor/Pathology Manager. In this position, you will have the following responsibilities:
ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS:
- Accurately handle, evaluate, and solve problems related to the collection and processing of surgical specimens for analysis. Completes work within established turnaround time.
- Integrate, apply science knowledge, troubleshoot, and perform more complex procedures for embedding, cutting paraffin sections, and staining H&E and special stains on surgical specimens. This includes having the knowledge of anatomy, pathology, and medical terminology to perform the job functions.
- Perform and document quality control and identify quality improvement initiatives to ensure optimum laboratory operation. Checks for incomplete tests and communicates any delays to the Histology Supervisor/Pathology Manager.
- Performs and records routine and pre-routine maintenance of equipment as needed/required/directed.
- Additional responsibilities include specimen accessioning, specimen storage, report storage and clerical functions as deemed necessary and as directed by Histology Supervisor.
- Examine specimens received and provide physical descriptions, in accordance with the non-pathologist grossing procedure.[BW1]
- Performs histological procedures on body tissue which include processing, embedding, and staining.
- Performs chemical hazardous waste disposal according to current operating policies and procedures, in accordance with local ordinances.
- May be required to serve on a rotation for Processor Alarm Calls[JH2] .
- Assists in ensuring there are adequate supplies for the lab. Reports needed supplies to Histology Supervisor.
- Adheres to all Corporate Policies and Procedures.
- Follows Employee Code of Conduct.
- Maintains clean work area.
- Is proficient in the use of computer system, including but not limited to, registering, verifying, accessioning and label printing of all pathology specimens.
- Completes annual review of required OSHA safety and policy and procedure manuals.
- All other duties as assigned.
EDUCATION
- Associate’s or bachelor’s degree in science which meets CAP ANP.11610 Gross Examination Qualifications and CMS § 493.1489 requirements is required.
- HT/HTL(ASCP) eligible required.
EXPERIENCE/SKILLS/KNOWLEDGE:
- Minimum of 1-2 years of prior Histotechnician exp. or previous anatomic pathology lab experience required.
- Excellent Word processing and computer experience required.
- Ability to communicate both written and verbally, clearly, and concisely
- Ability to manage time effectively and multitask
- Can interpret, adapt, and apply guidelines and procedures
REQUIREMENTS:
- Associates Degree in Approved Sciences, Bachelor’s; refer to requirements above.
- Nevada State Licensure required.
- ASCP Certification as Histologist preferred.
