Job Description: Licensed Veterinary Technician (LVT)
Reports to: Head Vet Technician or Shelter Veterinarian
Job Position Summary:
The LVT will work under the supervision of the Head Vet Tech to ensure all of the clients’ health needs are met. This position provides support to the Shelter Veterinarian, per diem Vets, and the Head Vet Tech, as needed.
Responsibilities include, but are not limited to:
- Assist Veterinarian with routine patient appointments and surgical procedures including, but not limited to admitting patients for procedures, taking patient histories, filling prescriptions as instructed, and performing client callbacks
- Assist in collecting and preparing lab samples including blood, urine, or fecal matter for testing in and out of house
- Ensure all surgical equipment is properly sterilized and stored
- Sanitize examining rooms and surface areas
- Perform anesthesia protocols, including pre-meds, induction, monitoring and post-op
- Provide care for animals after procedures by monitoring vitals and providing heat support
- Maintain controlled drug log
- Administer injectable, oral and topical medications
- Change animal bandages, bedding, and kennel materials
- Assist in emergency first aid
- Update clinic records, both written and in the clinic database
- Work closely with Head Vet Tech to maintain inventory
- Educate owners about animal health, conditions, and proper care
- Other duties as assigned
Requirements and Qualifications:
- Must be a licensed Veterinary Technician in New York State
- 1-2 years of experience in a Veterinary or Shelter Clinic preferred
- Ability to compassionately and kindly handle frightened or aggressive companion animals
- Flexible schedule, ability to rotate ‘on call’ weekends to assist with emergencies and shelter patients
- Excellent record keeping and attention to detail
- Ability to function and focus in a demanding and fast-paced environment
- Excellent written and verbal communication skills
