The Department of Mental Health (DMH) is seeking a dynamic candidate who will work as part of an interdisciplinary team of forensic clinicians. The Juvenile Court Clinician - Clinical Social Worker (C) provides a broad array of services to the Juvenile Court, including psychosocial evaluations of children, adolescents, and families.
The selected candidate also provides emergency evaluations, consultations, liaison, oral testimony as needed and some limited treatment and psycho-educational services. These services are provided to diverse youth and families with behavioral health concerns who come before the Juvenile Court on Delinquency, CRA’s, Care and Protection and emergency mental health and substance use matters. This position has less client contact hours than most clinical positions and includes extensive assessment report writing, record review and collateral contacts as major duties.
Duties and Responsibilities (these duties are a general summary and not all inclusive):
- Provides court-ordered, thorough, expert psychosocial evaluations and consultations of children, adolescents, and families, including detailed forensic reports, informal consultative follow-up, and (as needed) oral testimony.
- Consults with judges, attorneys, and probation officers.
- Provides supervision of staff and trainees.
- Provides coverage to a primary court location and to other courthouses (BJCC and non-BJCC locations) as needed and requested by DMH Forensic Services.
- Maintains liaison relationships with various public and private agencies, organizations, and officials for optimal integration of BJCC activities with system partners and to ensure access to needed dispositional placements.
- Provides in-service presentations to clinical staff in subject areas of interest and applicable to clinical work.
- Participates in collaborative meetings, workgroups, joint initiatives/projects as requested by the BJCC Director and DMH.
- Maintains a working knowledge of developments, trends, policies, and procedures in the mental health and substance use treatment systems, both public and private, to persons involved in the juvenile justice system through training offered by BJCC and Forensic Services of DMH, through reading materials, and through regular and required continuing education as necessary to maintain a current license.
Required Qualifications:
- Strong knowledge of child and adolescent development and family systems.
- Considerable knowledge of clinical interviewing, conducting mental status exams, clinical formulation, and diagnosis.
- Ability to write well-organized and concise psychosocial evaluation reports that are readable by non-mental health professionals.
- Considerable experience supervising social workers and trainees of an equal or lesser level of training/licensure that are performing forensic services.
Preferred Qualifications:
- Credentialed as a Certified Juvenile Court Clinician I, or eligible to be credentialed as a Certified Juvenile Court Clinician I per 104 CMR 33.00 within 2 years.
- Commitment towards diversity, social justice, and equity, including a culturally sensitive and humble approach to clinical work.
- Ability to perform at a highly skilled level in crisis intervention and work under considerable time pressure on multiple tasks.
- Given the population served, bilingual or multilingual fluency.

MINIMUM ENTRANCE REQUIREMENTS:
REQUIRED WORK EXPERIENCE:
At least two years of full-time, or equivalent part-time, professional experience as a clinical social worker after earning a Master's degree in social work.
SUBSTITUTIONS:
- A Doctorate in social work, psychology, sociology, counseling, counseling education, or human services may be substituted for the required experience on the basis of two years of education for one year of experience.
- One year of education equals 30 semester hours. Education toward a degree will be prorated on the basis of the proportion of the requirements actually completed.
REQUIRED EDUCATION:
A Master's or higher degree in social work is required.
LICENSES:
- Licensure as a Licensed Certified Social Worker or Licensed Independent Clinical Social Worker by the Massachusetts Board of Registration in Social Work is required.
- Based on assignment, travel may be required. Those employees who elect to use a motor vehicle for travel must have a current and valid Massachusetts Motor Vehicle Operator's license or the equivalent from another state.
