The Alternative Family Living (AFL) Support Specialist is responsible for providing care, support, and assistance to individuals with intellectual and developmental disabilities (IDD) within a family-like environment. The primary goal is to enhance the quality of life for individuals with IDD by promoting independence, community inclusion, and personal growth within a supportive and nurturing family setting.

Position Overview: The Alternative Family Living (AFL) Support Specialist is responsible for providing care, support, and assistance to individuals with intellectual and developmental disabilities (IDD) within a family-like environment. The primary goal is to enhance the quality of life for individuals with IDD by promoting independence, community inclusion, and personal growth within a supportive and nurturing family setting.

Requirements:
- Must be at least 21 years old.
- Must know American Sign Language
- Able to effectively read, write, and communicate verbally in English, understand instructions and perform record keeping.
- Must have a reliable vehicle and safe driving record.
- Must have a valid drivers license and state minimum auto insurance.
- Background checks will be performed on all applicants.
- Not listed in the North Carolina Health Care Abuse registry.
- High school diploma or equivalent.
- Must have basic computer skills.
- May be required to pass a drug screen and must have no evidence of a communicable disease

About This Position:
- AFL or Alternative Family Living is a type of Residential Supports available to NC Innovations consumers.
- An AFL provider is an individual or couple who chooses to provide Residential Supports in their home. The AFL site (home) must be the primary residence of the AFL provider. AFL is a comprehensive service individually designed to meet the needs of the consumer.
- An AFL provider receives payment for the services and support provided to the consumer. AFL providers also receive reimbursement for room and board expenses of the consumer through a separate funding source.
- Habilitative services focus on the individual's ability to reside as independently as possible in the community. The individual is assisted with acquiring, improving and retaining skills in self-help, general household management, meal preparation, personal finance management, socialization and other adaptive areas.
- Assistance in activities of daily living is provided per the individual's needs. Full participation in home life and community are also encouraged and supported. AFL provider transports the individual to and from the residence to community destinations.
