Position Purpose
The primary responsibility of the Architectural Designer is to operate Computer Aided Design Software, including creating, updating and modifying architectural floor plans. Having a general knowledge of technical standards, building codes, and design and construction documents is also required.
The following is a list of general responsibilities for the Architectural Draftsman. It is understood that these general responsibilities are not inclusive of a the duties that this position requires, but instead, are intended as a general scope of work.
Essential Functions
- Create and modify CADD drawings, BIM (REVIT), and Sketch-up
- Effectively communicate with architects and engineers regarding technical issues of projects.
- Completes Architects' concepts by preparing drawings and plans, and liaising with builders and contractors.
- Obtain and assemble data to complete architectural designs, visiting job sites to compile measurements as necessary.
- Draw rough and detailed scale plans for foundations, buildings and structures, based on preliminary concepts, sketches, engineering calculations, specification sheets and other data.
- Represent architect on construction site, ensuring builder compliance with design specifications and advising on design corrections, under architect's supervision.
- Analyze technical implications of architect's design concept, calculating weights, volumes, and stress factors.
- Analyze building codes, by-laws, space and site requirements, and other technical documents and reports to determine their effect on architectural designs.
- Assists in design planning and detailing by preparing studies, layouts, and preliminary work in connection with architectural projects.
- Proposes, recommends, and justifies changes in materials, construction methods, equipment installations, specifications, and architectural drawings.
- Performs other related duties as assigned.
Minimum Qualifications
- 4-years related degree and 3 or more years Auto-CAD experience
- 2-years associates’ degree or completion of a technical trade school in Auto-CAD, drafting or related field and 4 or more years Auto-CAD.
- 7 or more years Auto-CAD experience with no formal degree (High School Diploma).
- Architectural design and communication skills are required
- A background in construction is preferred.
Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities
- Basic knowledge of steel, concrete and wood construction systems.
- Ability to develop AutoCAD files for engineering projects; maintain complete, readily accessible files and records.
- Establish and maintain effective working relationships with co-workers and outside engineers.
- Ability to operate plotters.
- Function as an effective member of a project team.
- Work with speed, accuracy and creativity.
- Knowledge of International Building Code (IBC), International Energy Conservation Code (IECC).
- Knowledge of construction products and materials.
- Ability to research municipal building requirements
- Knowledge of CAD drafting principles, practices, methods and techniques.
- Ability to read and interpret construction drawings; prepare accurate detailed drawings from data supplied; operate computer using standard drafting software packages.
- Ability to work with minimum supervision and capable of self-checking for completeness and accuracy of work produced.
