Head Coach Job Description
Soccer for Success is the U.S. Soccer Foundation’s innovative youth development program that uses soccer as a tool to combat childhood obesity and promote healthy lifestyles for children in underserved urban communities. Soccer for Success uses sport for social change and strives to address the holistic needs of under-served children.
JOB SUMMARY
This position will lead the implementation and oversight of the Soccer for Success program in one of the twelve school or park locations across Houston. The Head Coach serves as a mentor and positive role model for children. The Head Coach must follow the U.S. Soccer Foundation curriculum and abide by all Houston Soccer for Success and school district policies. Individual program schedules will be determined by Houston Soccer for Success program director, but format will follow: three 90 minute sessions per week, spread over two 12-week seasons (fall/spring); times range from 3:00 pm – 6:00 pm or 6:00 pm – 9:00pm.
Coaches will be expected to work for 3 hours on each of the three days.
ESSENTIAL JOB FUNCTIONS
1. Implements U.S. Soccer Foundation Soccer for Success curriculum.
2. Oversees practice sessions that are both stimulating and instructive, conducted on a regular basis with the goal of developing the players’ greatest potential; teaches basic fundamental skills of soccer; emphasizes and promotes healthy, active lifestyles, good sportsmanship and nutritional eating.
3. Supervises players to promote effective student learning through participation in athletic activities and nutritional education.
4. Serves as a positive role model and mentor for youth; teaches positive behavior such as teamwork, and sportsmanship.
5. Oversees equipment and systematic return of all equipment at the finish of each session.
6. Oversees volunteer coaches.
7. Follows and implements required monitoring and evaluation policies/tools, including, pre and post surveys.
8. Maintains and records accurate records including: attendance, debrief forms, and time sheets.
OTHER JOB DUTIES
1. Attends mandatory training before the start of each season (August, February).
2. Attends all Houston Soccer for Success coaching meetings and trainings
3. Attends and assists at Family Engagement Events.
4. Builds professional relationships with school and community partner representatives.
5. Communicates with program administrators on a weekly basis; daily if needed
CONDITIONS
Soccer for Success Head Coach Job Description
Work with elementary students in outdoor playing field or indoor course/gymnasium, depending on location; physical ability to lift and move sports equipment and demonstrate sport skills; may be exposed to inclement weather. Must also be able to coach virtually.
QUALIFICATIONS
Education and Experience
Must be at least 18 years of age; coaching experience and bilingual preferred
Knowledge, Skills and Abilities
Knowledge of youth soccer and coaching best practices
Ability to maintain a professional relationship with school and community partners
Ability to work with a variety of people in a multi-cultural, diverse socio-economic setting
Ability to develop concepts such teamwork, healthy lifestyles, sportsmanship and nutrition
Ability to oversee volunteer coaches
Ability to follow reporting requirements set forth by Houston Soccer for Success
Ability to implement monitoring requirements such as: BMI testing and Player Surveys
Ability to coach both fall and spring season preferred
Licenses/Special Requirements
Must be able to pass a background check

Pay: $13.00 - $16.00 per hour
