The Chief Nursing Officer (CNO) is responsible for the planning, organization, and management of nursing services, including staffing, training and development, communications, and documentation to maintain quality patient care standards. The CNO provides the direction and support required to affect high-quality patient outcomes. As a member of the senior leadership team, the CNO works closely with the CMO and COO to guide clinical services with a focus on achieving healthcare excellence.
**Essential Duties and Responsibilities:**
- Identifies and articulates the vision and strategic direction for the development of high-quality nursing care consistent with the organization's mission, vision, and values.
- Creates a nursing environment in which collaboration is valued and excellence in clinical care and education is promoted and achieved. Takes responsibility for the practice of nursing and ensures consistency in the standard of practice across clinical settings.
- Leads quality and patient safety efforts.
- Provides leadership and direction in the development of strategies to promote the recruitment, retention, and recognition of excellence in nursing.
- Manages costs by continually seeking data that will identify opportunities and act to eliminate non-value costs.
- Develops and manages the nursing services budget and ensures a sufficient number of qualified staff to assess patient needs.
- Provides leadership and direction for clinical programs and services, assuring the appropriate resources for the delivery of clinical care. Maintains current knowledge of patient care delivery systems and innovations.
- Actively participates in strategic meetings to enhance and improve operational performance.
- Ensures staff is clinically competent and trained on their role in patient safety, performance improvement, and risk management.
- Collaborates with physicians, administrative, and other staff involved in health and patient-care activities.
- Coordinates and monitors regulatory compliance at the State and Federal levels; prepares for and participates in regulatory surveys.
- Responsible for the provision of nursing services 24 hours a day, 7 days a week. A registered nurse is immediately available for provision of bedside care to any patient.
- Exercises final authority over staff who provide nursing care, treatment, and services.
- Implements an effective, ongoing program to measure, analyze, and improve the quality of nursing care, treatment, and services.
- Develops organization-wide programs, policies, and procedures that address how nursing care needs of the patient population are assessed, met, and evaluated.
**Qualifications:**
- Demonstrated experience in hospital operations as a Chief Nursing Executive, with an acute care background.
- Excellent management, communication, and relationship-building skills are required.
- Successful track record in program development and quality/process improvement.
- Minimum of 7–10 years of leadership experience.
- Master’s degree in nursing or a related field required. Master’s and MBA are preferred.
- Current RN license.
