BookPage is seeking an experienced finance and operations professional in Nashville, Tennessee, for the full-time role of Controller. The Controller is a key contributor to our company’s success, governing all aspects of BookPage’s financial activities, contributing to operational projects and processes, and coordinating with our PEO and leadership team on HR matters.

Our monthly magazine is a trusted source for book recommendations for all ages and across all genres, formats and categories. Available in both print and digital editions, BookPage reaches a nationwide audience of more than 400,000 avid readers through 3,500 subscribing public libraries and bookstores.
PRIMARY RESPONSIBILITIES
Financial
- Oversee and lead the creation of the annual organizational budget, in close collaboration with President and Editor-in-Chief/Publisher, providing guidance for all staff with budget oversight responsibilities.
- Support budget management and forecasting throughout the year, including monthly financial statements and reporting, and manage bank activity and cash flow.
- Monitor BookPage’s financial accounts in accordance with internal protocols; interpret and present financial results of operations monthly, keeping reporting templates and systems up to date.
- Liaise and act as primary point person with external accounting firm and act as a primary point person in financial communications, reporting and overall stewardship.
- Liaise with PEO to monitor payroll, payroll liabilities and benefits including PTO accrual and retirement plans.
- Ensure efficient functioning, documentation and best practices for all financial systems, including expense reporting, disbursements, billing, bookkeeping, budgeting and accounting; oversee accounts receivable and payable.
- Manage subscription revenue and monthly accrual.
Operational
- Coordinate details of monthly magazine print run with both printer(s) and logistics companies overseeing accuracy of manifest, shipper invoices and delivery.
- Ensure that filing systems are organized, complete, and current.
- Oversee and collaborate with various team members to manage our physical infrastructure and space and system maintenance (i.e., phone system, security, cleaning, insurance, supplies, etc.).
Human Resources & Staff Management
- Be the main point of contact with and monitor effectiveness of our PEO, which manages timesheets, payroll, benefits, etc.
- Facilitate the PEO-employee relationship by fielding benefits questions from employees and any HR needs not handled by the PEO, as well as ongoing maintenance of a 401(k) plan, health/dental/vision insurance plans, LTD and STD plans and others.
- Collaborate on hiring, onboarding and off-boarding processes.
- Work with leadership team to ensure BookPage fosters a supportive, responsive work environment; support opportunities for staff development and team-building.
Leadership & Strategy
- Promote and maintain an organization-wide culture of exemplary fiscal responsibility based on transparency, accuracy, timeliness and compliance.
- Lead strategic and multi-year budgeting and financial forecasting, with an eye towards thoughtful growth, including developing multi-year financial models and strategies.
- Ensure compliance with city, state and federal protocols across all activities, keeping abreast of changing laws, policies and best practices; modify existing and develop new internal policies as needed.
We are looking for these skills:
- At least 5 years of experience in a financial management position.
- Experience with long-term financial planning, budgeting and resource management to support organizational stability and growth.
- Clear communication and ability to translate financial information into actionable strategy for a variety of stakeholders.
- Extreme attention to detail and strong organizational skills.
- Proficiency in MS Office Suite, Google Suite, Quickbooks (desktop and online versions), Quickbooks Financial Statement Writer, database programs, Zoom and Slack.

COMPENSATION & BENEFITS
Salary from $80–$100K depending on experience. Our compensation package also includes:
- Hybrid work schedule (3 days in office/2 days remote)
