JOB SUMMARY
The Communications Strategist is responsible for supporting Executives, Leaders, HR and other Communications Teams_ in the development and execution of communications on behalf of the company to support our core business strategies, initiatives, and programs. Utilizing a varied range of written, verbal, digital and multi-channel communications, the Communications Strategist will deliver collaborative, integrated, and culturally appropriate communications that advance the company’s reputation, vision, positive culture, and consistent messaging._
This role manages the planning and daily workflows of the company’s communications to align internal and external messaging that will represent the organization. This position executes the process with supporting teams and committees responsible for the creative design of visual communication materials and technical support for communications, production of multimedia projects, company events and sponsorships, and the collection of branded archival materials.
JOB FUNCTIONS
Communication Strategy and Content Creation
- Develop and deliver internal communications programs to support business priorities and strategic initiatives by collaborating with internal stakeholders and leadership to convey key messaging.
- Develop a robust communication strategy that identifies:
- All communication platforms and the type on content that belongs on each
- Content guide that is in line with brand voice, corporate communications messaging and tone
- Cadence for each communication outlet that will generate recurring content
- Develop, update and maintain content calendars for approval by department leaders
- Set and track KPIs
- Plan, execute, and create assets in the forms of video, infographics, emails, announcements, talking points, surveys, flipbooks/guides, trainings, social media assets, web content, and press releases.
- Managing Editor for ClaytonHub, Vanderbilt Newsletter and enterprise communication needs to provide regular updates of the business and messaging. Partner with IT and website development as necessary for site development and deployment.
- Directly collaborates with other departments, leaders and committees to help strategically create and review needed content to ensure consistency and alignment on communication goals.
- Involved in any Vanderbilt video creation to review scripting, style, amplification, distribution, and final review.
- Collaborate with senior leaders and Human Resources to support change management efforts, providing communication content and delivery mechanisms required to ensure alignment and consistency.
- Implements best practices through SEO/linking strategies, branding and CTA’s when applicable.
- Works with legal team to ensure all content is compliant.
- Ensure content creation is strategically aligned with company and business unit goals as it applies to communications.
- Assist Executive and Human Resources with planning, developing, and executing internal and external communication strategies and tactics designed to inform and align the company’s reputation and strategic vision.
- Oversee planning of Company events, employee celebrations, and community relations activities.
- Coach and mentor VMF Leaders and Team Members in improving their communication skills, to include expressing themselves more clearly and adapting their communication style to different situations and individuals.
Data and Research
- Works collaboratively with Insights Team on new topics to digest and translate data insights where it serves beneficial for communication to Team Member, Leaders, Recruiting, and other audience.
- Develops employee educational campaigns to share and amplify important company information and resources.
- Gather data points from credible 3rd party resources to substantiate topics and build supporting content, infographics, slide decks, and company messaging.
- Continuously researching for important and relevant data as well as innovate ways to improve company communications at all levels.
- Stay up to date on industry news and communication through general research and Public Relations (PR) platforms.
- Utilize listening tools when and where needed to proactively being in the know of any news outlets or coverage that may connect to Vanderbilt.
- Proactively prepare through training and with the help of the Corporate Communications/PR team to have messaging prepared for varies crisis events.
Metrics and Analytics
- Measure and track results of designated communications and events for effectiveness through the design and implementation of ClaytonHub, Newsletters, Website, Social, Email Announcements through StaffBase, surveys and other platforms as applicable.
- Recommend improvement strategies as necessary to senior leadership.
- Use Data Analytics to determine the impact of each content medium for each platform, allowing for a better understanding of which content type to use and data to prove it.

QUALIFICATIONS:
- Bachelor’s Degree in Communications, Journalism, Marketing or Public Relations, or equivalent experience.
- Minimum of four to seven years of related experience in communications, marketing and/or PR.
- Advanced ability to write in a journalistic style that is customary for corporate and external communications.
- Excellent verbal, written and information-gathering skills.
- Strong collaborative skills to build partnerships across the organization.
- Ability to coordinate efforts of various teams to present a coherent message.
- Clear understanding of business and the internal/external impact communications can make.
- Technical expertise in digital, social media, and website development.
- Ability to work without direct supervision.
- Strong project management and task prioritization.
- Great attention to detail and organizational skills.
PHYSICAL DEMANDS:
- Must be able to remain in a stationary position 75% of the time.
- Will be constantly operating a computer and other office productivity machinery, such as a telephone, calculator, copy machine, and computer printer.
- Will constantly work in a state-of-the-art indoor temperature controlled, sealed window office environment.
