Description:The APRN holds a Kansas license as a professional nurse in an advanced role who may provide primary and limited secondary health care to those seeking reproductive health care services. This position works in collaborative practice with a contracted medical consultant and reports to the Health Department Clinic Supervisor. This position requires leadership and skills in the field of women’s reproductive health, contributing to the annual grant application and required grant reporting to the Kansas Department of Health and Environment.
ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS:
- Develop and manage medical care plans for patients based upon an agreement developed jointly and signed by the APRN and the Collaborating Physician.
- Provide confidential, medically sound, timely, and respectful care and assistance to patients.
- Utilize electronic health records and other health records to document client care in a professional, accurate and timely manner (within 24 hours).
- Consult, refer and collaborate with other disciplines to deliver client care.
- Assist in continuity of care via record requests from other providers, written referrals, and appropriate follow-up in accordance with agency policy and procedures.
- Develop and update clinical protocols with the Collaborating Physician and Clinic Supervisor. The Protocols will follow the guidelines provided in Providing Quality Family Planning Services: Recommendations of CDC and the U.S. Office of Population Affairs and other nationally recognized standards of practice.
- Obtain initial/periodic history, reason for visit, and presenting problem.
- Examine patients as indicated by reason for visit and appropriate for age and gender.
- Order tests and treatments consistent with clinical impressions and diagnosis within protocols.
- Consult with Collaborating Physician as appropriate.
- Provide reproductive health services i.e., gynecological and breast health examinations, Pap smears, STI testing, UTI evaluation, birth control evaluations and prescribing, placing long-acting reversible contraceptives, depo injections according to reason for visit and clinical expertise.
- Provide information regarding illness prevention, safe sex practices, lifestyle change/behavior modification, and appropriate treatment regimens to assist individuals in assuming responsibility for the prevention of illness and the promotion, maintenance, and restoration of their health.
- Assess real or potential health hazards for clients including analyzing health behavior related to lifestyle and culture. Encourages clients to return for follow up as needed.
- Acquire and use knowledge of community and regional resources to benefit clients.
- Communicate effectively with health care providers in the community.
- Participates in emergency response Health Department efforts as needed.
- Present educational programs to staff and the public as required.
NOMINAL FUNCTIONS:
- Work with the Clinic Supervisor to develop the annual grant application and required reporting.
- Act as resource to assist with patient questions.
- Serve as a role model and clinical mentor for students and staff.
- Attend staff and nursing staff meetings as scheduled.
- Attend continuing education directly related to clinical practice annually.
- Consult, collaborate, and confer with other staff and providers.
- Participate in Health Department activities as required.
- Other duties as assigned.
POSITION REQUIREMENTS:
Education: Eligible to be licensed to practice as an Advanced Practice Registered Nurse (APRN) with prescriptive authority in the State of Kansas and 4 years of experience registered nursing. Master’s degree in nursing with a licensure as an advanced practice nurse preferred.
License(s): Kansas APRN licensure in the category of Nurse Practitioner. Possess a valid driver’s license and good driving record. Certification for CPR.
Knowledge: At least 1 year as an APRN in reproductive health care. CPR certification required. Excellent communication skills to interact with patients, staff, and health care providers. General understanding of clinic services beyond reproductive health required.
Conforms to HIPAA privacy regulations specific to position held. Disclosures are only allowed as necessary for treatment to providers and/or Business Associates, for billing, health care operations or as required by law. May need to interact with other county departments for allowable access to PHI.
