Safety Manager
Job Description
The Safety Manager is responsible for the overall strategy and implementation of the Black Hills Bentonite LLC (“BHB”) safety program. This includes all policies and procedures, finding news way to evolve safety at all levels, and compliance with Mine Safety and Health Administration (MSHA) rules and regulations.
Primary responsibilities:
1. Develop, update, and promote safety policies and practices to further the health and safety culture at BHB.
2. Represent BHB as the main contact for regulatory agencies with regard to safety issues.
3. Monitor employee and contractor compliance with safety policies.
4. Be available for “on-call” accidents, incidents and other safety situations of BHB’s 24/7 business.
5. Oversee new-hire safety orientation and training.
6. Monitor and analyze accident/incident data to identify trends and implement corrective measures.
7. Strategize annual refresher safety training for BHB personnel, including contractors.
8. Oversee BHB and MSHA audits and inspections. Audits and inspections include: new equipment, process safety, and monthly plant and mine site inspections.
9. File regular mine reports for State and Federal mine safety and health administrations.
10. Develop digital training records for easy access.
11. Manage a staff of 1-2 people.
Detailed responsibilities:
· As required, integrate MSHA rules and regulations into policies.
· Maintain safety records and data in accordance with BHB and regulatory requirements.
· Ensure that safety incidents are investigated to discover causes, reports are completed to the proper departments, and corrective actions are tracked in a timely manner.
· Identify potential safety hazards and develop plans to mitigate risks.
· Provide safety support that may include: construction safety, shutdown safety, project safety, pre-job safety reviews, safety meetings, and tailgates.
· Digitize, sort and file existing and new incoming safety-related paperwork.
· Work with Human Resources to manage workers' compensation claims, ensuring timely reporting and follow-up
· Inspect equipment and machinery on a pre-determined basis to observe and assist in correcting any unsafe conditions. Identify any potential safety problems. Communicate and initiate corrective actions as appropriate.
· Report to management on safety awareness, issues and statistics.
· Work with the RCG team on any supporting situations.
· Other duties as may be required.
Reporting:
The Safety Manager reports to the Production and Safety Director, and works within the Regulatory Compliance Group (“RCG”).
Qualifications:
Education: At least two years of college, bachelor’s degree preferred. Equivalent experience also acceptable.
Experience and Attributes:
- Knowledge of and experience with compliance of MSHA rules and regulations
- Ability to remain calm in the face of pressure and emergencies
- Excellent communication skills, including ability to explain safety guidelines clearly to employees. Understand how to motivate people absent supervisory authority
- Strong leadership, organizational and motivational skills
- Team player, with good interpersonal skills
- Self-starter who can prioritize and implement tasks with minimal supervisor oversight
- Ability to complete projects safely, correctly and on schedule
- Ability to understand impact of decisions
- Reliable and responsible
- Good at detail and analysis
- Proficient in Microsoft Word, PowerPoint, and Excel
Compensation and Benefits:
The Safety Manager is a salaried position.
This position qualifies for all employee benefits offered by BHB.
BHB furnishes training, equipment, and necessary tools to complete jobs in a safe and timely manner.
BHB provides a company vehicle limited to company business purposes. The position shall follow company vehicle policies. Vehicle use to be reviewed by the Production and Safety Director on a regular basis.
BHB reimburses the employee for pre-approved out-of-pocket company expenses incurred while employed by BHB. An expense report must be filled out and approved by the CFO for out-of-pocket expenses to be recovered.
Job Details:
This position will be based in Casper and will require travel to plant and mine sites and other locations as needed, including training, safety audits, on-call safety situation analysis and oversight, and other situations that require on-site attention.
Ability to work flexible hours, including evenings and weekends as needed to accommodate the needs of the organization.
Conditions of Employment:
Employment with BHB is dependent on passing an initial drug screening test and random drug screening throughout employment, which is paid for by the company.
The Safety Manager must have and maintain a valid vehicle driver’s license and maintain a good driving record. Changes to your driving record shall be reported to the Company. Your involvement in a company vehicle crash or substantial damage to a company vehicle where you are determined to be at fault may be grounds for termination of employment.

Pay: $85,000.00 - $105,000.00 per year
