English Language Learner Teacher Job Responsibilities
The job of the ELL Teacher provides support to the instructional process by serving as a teacher with specific responsibility for developing English Learner students' ability to effectively perform courses of study in the English language; developing lesson plans and delivering group and individual student instruction within established curriculum guidelines; collaborating with key stakeholders in achieving student success for ELLs; and ensuring federal and state compliance in regards to ELL regulations.
Job responsibilities include:
- Administer tests and language assessments for the purpose of evaluating student language ability
- Advise parents and/or legal guardians of student progress for the purpose of communicating expectations; student achievement; developing methods for improvement and/or reinforcing classroom goals in the home environment.
- Adapt classroom work for the purpose of providing students with instructional materials that address individualized learning plans within established lesson plans and building academic English and content knowledge.
- Collaborate with instructional staff, other school personnel, parents and a variety of community resources for the purpose of improving the overall quality of student outcomes, achieving established classroom objectives in support of the school improvement plan
- Instruct English learner students for the purpose of improving their success in academics and skills.
- Advocate for the needs of ELLs with teachers and leaders
- Coordinate and administer ELPT
- Ensure compliance with state and federal mandates for ELL students
- Ensure all documentation as mandated by Jefferson Parish is in compliance (e.g. ACE Forms)
- Provide interventions to ELLs and support teachers in providing instruction within the classroom
- Maintain an open line of communication between family and school in an effort to build relationships
- Modify and adapt lessons to meet the needs of all ELL students
- Serve as the ELL Liaison between YACS and JPPSS’ ELL Department
- Identify new ELL’s and refer families to JPPSS for testing.
- All other duties as assigned
Communication
- Establish and maintain open lines of communication with students and their parents, the school leader, and other colleagues.
- Maintain a professional relationship with all colleagues, students, parents, and community members.
- Use acceptable communication skills to present information accurately and clearly.
- Conference with parents to consistently update them on their child’s progress.
Professional Conduct and Other
- Exhibit professional judgment and responsibility at all times.
- Demonstrate behavior that is professional, ethical, and responsible.
- Participate in assigned morning, lunch, and afternoon duties.
- Follow attendance policy as assigned by supervisor.
- Perform other functions that may be assigned by the Administration and/or supervisor.
- Attend and participate in faculty meetings and serve on staff committees as required.
SUGGESTED QUALIFICATIONS
- Love and appreciation for the arts and arts education
- Bachelor’s degree (required)
- 3+ Years of Teaching Experience (required)
- Teaching certification (preferred but not required)
- ESOL Certification (preferred but not required)
- Spanish Speaking (preferred but not required)
