Position: Native American Language Translator
Location: Remote (with occasional site visits)
Department: Office of Indian Economic Development, USDA
Background: The United States is home to 574 federally recognized Tribal Nations, with approximately 229 in Alaska and the remaining 345 spread across 35 other states. The Office of Indian Economic Development, in collaboration with the USDA, seeks to provide Native Language translation services to federal agencies, ensuring media and documentation are accessible to tribal communities in their native languages.
Purpose: The Assistant Secretary – Indian Affairs is committed to making official documents, signage, and website content available to the widest possible audience of the Tribal Nations. This initiative requires translating government documentation into multiple indigenous languages.
Scope of Work: As a Native American Language Translator, you will be responsible for providing written and audio translation services to various federal agencies. The goal is to ensure tribal nations have access to information in their prevalent native languages.
Key Responsibilities:
- Translate official documents, signage, website content, and other media into specified Native American languages.
- Provide written translations in Microsoft Word format, with separate files for each language.
- Deliver audio translations electronically in Broadcast Wave Format (BWF), with separate audio files for each language.
- Ensure accurate and culturally sensitive translations into the following languages (with specific dialects as applicable):
- Yu'pik (Central dialect)
- Cherokee (Western dialect)
- Ojibwe (Western dialect)
- Lakota
- Navajo
Qualifications:
- Proficiency in one or more of the specified Native American languages and their dialects.
- Strong written and verbal communication skills.
- Experience in translating documents and audio content.
- Proficiency in using Microsoft Word and audio recording software.
- Understanding of cultural nuances and sensitivity to tribal traditions and languages.
