Job Title: Chemical Engineer/Research assistant
Location: Somerville, MA
Job Type: Full-Time/Permanent
About the Company:
Earth faces an alarming freshwater scarcity, impacting developed and developing nations alike. NONA Technologies pioneers a transformative approach to desalination, employing a patented electrical attraction method for salt and pathogen removal from water. Through the innovative Ion Concentration Polarization (ICP) technology developed at MIT, NONA achieves remarkable energy efficiency, reducing electricity consumption by 25%-60% in treating brackish water compared to conventional methods. This breakthrough solution empowers communities globally with sustainable clean water access, enables off-grid mobile water supply, and expands industrial water reuse through cost-effective and low-maintenance brackish water desalination.
Job Description:
NONA Technologies, Inc. is actively seeking a highly experienced and highly motivated Chemical Engineer to build a pilot scale ICP (Ion Concentration Polarization) process, which was invented at MIT, for brackish water, produced water, and wastewater treatment. This position will be heavily focused on the detailed technical design (associated with pumping systems, piping, valves), the development of the control system (for pressure sensing, flow rate monitor, and high-power DC supply), and field testing. The travel will be required for field testing (10%).
Responsibilities:
The responsibilities of this position include, but are not limited to:
· Perform analytic experiment of ICP process and provide recommendations for process enhancements to optimize efficiency.
· Monitor and analyze process performance data.
· Develop and maintain effective process control strategies to ensure consistent process stability and quality.
· Plan, design, and execute the development and integration of the pilot-scale ICP module for brackish water and wastewater treatment.
· Conceptualize, create, and put into practice the pilot-scale ICP system with the aim of boosting productivity, reducing operational costs, and enhancing product quality.
· Conduct on-site testing and evaluation of the pilot-scale ICP system, collecting data and assessing its performance.
· Draft and establish Process Flow Diagrams (PFDs) and Piping and Instrumentation Diagrams (P+IDs) for the ICP process.
· Lead the scaling-up of ICP technologies, overseeing their transition from pilot-scale to demonstration and commercial scale.
· Collaborate closely with equipment suppliers to ensure the procurement of equipment that meets specified requirements.
· Work collaboratively with compact-scale ICP system teams to troubleshoot technical issues and implement necessary process adjustments.
· Ensure strict compliance with all relevant industry regulations and standards, particularly those related to water treatment.
· Create and deliver comprehensive training programs for production personnel to facilitate their understanding and proficiency in the ICP process.
· Oversee the development and implementation of process plants across various scales.
Mandatory requirements (one required, not all):
· Bachelor’s in chemical engineering.
· Master’s or Ph.D. in water treatment related fields, including electrodialysis, capacitive deionization, electrodeionization, reverse osmosis, or filtration technology.
· 3+ years of industry experience designing or operating water treatment process.
Additional requirements:
· Experience with electrodialysis, capacitive deionization, electrodeionization, reverse osmosis, or filtration technology.
· Experience with pumping system design at large scale for water treatment.
· Understanding of process scaleup from laboratory to pilot scale is desired.
· Proven track record of implementing processes, improvements, and troubleshooting technical problems.
· Strong capital cost and operating cost knowledge of relevant processes, equipment, and unit operations.
· Conducting engineering calculations, mass and energy balances, process modeling, and process equipment design.
· Excellent analytical, problem-solving, and communication skills.
· Experience with process simulation software and data analysis tools.
· Ability to work independently and as part of a team.
· Familiar with advanced analytical techniques such as ICP-OES, ICP-MS, conductivity measurement, BOD, COD, and pH measurement.
· Basic skills in AutoCAD, Solidworks, and LabVIEW.
