Substance Abuse Prevention Coordinator, African American Health Program (AAHP)
A substance abuse prevention coordinator collaborates with other healthcare professionals, such as psychologists, social workers, and educators, to develop and implement substance abuse programs targeted at the community, such as school and community prevention programs. The substance abuse prevention coordinator will assess community health and substance misuse needs and develop educational and practical support resources to prevent the prevalence and incidence of substance misuse among Black residents in Montgomery County, MD. In addition responsibilities are to identify, obtain, and create printed or electronic materials; conduct and supervise direct training at community events to raise substance abuse awareness, prevention, and education; and improve access to treatment. This position will report the progress of completed task activities to the AAHP Clinical Director.
JOB SUMMARY: The Substance Abuse Prevention Coordinator will focus on helping Black Montgomery County, MD residents including youth make better choices about drug use and prevent substance misuse, including fentanyl use and incidence of overdose emergencies and deaths. The coordinator will provide intake/counseling and addiction prevention services to youth and adults who are at risk for use disorders, and who are mentally and emotionally impaired.
ESSENTIAL DUTIES and RESPONSIBILITIES:
- Provide initial assessment and confidential addiction counseling, education, and support services to individuals, families, groups, and communities to promote healthy lifestyles and choices.
- Assist individuals in identifying their need for accessing substance misuse treatment and providing referrals to appropriate care and intervention.
- Host community collaboration events to discuss substance misuse, along with health issues, with parents, youth, and Black community organizations in Montgomery County.
- Educate Black County residents on the benefits of healthy lifestyles and refer at least 60 county residents with substance misuse to drug addiction and mental health service agencies.
- Develop and present addiction and relapse prevention education and information counseling to individuals and groups regarding the use and effect of alcohol and drugs and relapse prevention on sobriety and health.
- Maintain evidence-based practices for addiction education programs.
- Provide consultation and training to AAHP staff on substance abuse disorder treatment issues.
- Collaborate with other professionals involved with clients for individualized care.
- Maintain strict confidentiality guidelines regarding client care.
- Maintain accurate client records and Individualized Goal Plans.
- Evaluate the effectiveness and progress toward treatment goals, communicate needs, progress, and barriers, and document progress in an electronic health record (NexGen).
- Collect baseline information and evaluate program metrics at 4-month intervals throughout the projects.
- Prepare monthly reports of progress and accomplishments.
- Other duties as assigned.
EDUCATION and EXPERIENCE:
- Bachelor’s degree from an accredited College or university in human services or related field
- Three years of experience in a social service organization
- Certified as a Substance Abuse Counselor (CSAC)
- Certified Addictions Counseling (CAC)
- Current appropriate licensure, such as LCSW-C, CSC-AD, or LCACD
- A minimum of 2 years of experience in the provision of substance use counseling and substance abuse groups
- Experience in a public health setting with a diverse population
- Ability to effectively manage administrative and clinical tasks
- Ability to work both independently and with a team strong clinical knowledge of substance misuse, trauma, homelessness, and chronic mental illness
- Strong verbal, written, and computer skills
- For candidates in recovery, a minimum of 2 years of sobriety
SKILLS and COMPETENCIES:
- Knowledge of client needs risk assessments and service plans.
- Knowledge of mental illness and addiction services, theory, and recovery.
