JOB PURPOSE: Develops and implements optimal, cost-effective manufacturing processes and methods in accordance with product specifications and quality standards. Recommends and implements improvements to production processes, methods and controls (including environmental).
AUTHORITY: All employees have the authority to stop operations/production for the following three reasons: 1) a quality defect, 2) an unsafe act, or 3) a health hazard.
POSITION SUMMARY
This position is responsible for building or repairing all types, sizes and shapes of tools, dies, fixtures and jigs. Assemble and tryout complex tools and dies on manufacturing equipment as required for production.
RESPONSIBILITIES
- Wears all required safety equipment and ensures area and environment is safe
- Perform preventative maintenance as required
- Clean and organize area, keep area free of clutter and safety hazards – 6S
- Reads and interprets blueprints or works from verbal or written instructions or from the part to be copied or fitted
- Plans the setup and operation of all types of machine shop tools, considering types of material, tolerances, types of cutting tools, coolants, lubricants and machine tool feeds and speeds
- Heat-treats and welds parts as required
- Determines specifications for inspection of work, using precision measuring and gaging tools, performing required inspection before, during and after machining
- Performs hand operations involved in producing jigs, fixtures, tools and dies. Uses hand tools of the trade
- Fits and assembles jigs, fixtures, tools and dies. Sets up, runs off and tests dies to produce a product to specifications, tracing die difficulties to their source and correcting same
- Tear down, repairs and reassembles tooling on the bench or in the press as required
- High degree of precision and control in work where damage could be high and where muscular control and delicate touch are required
- Able to pull and set-up tooling
- Must have valid forklift operator’s card (or be willing to be trained before starting job assignment)
- Does in-press P.M.’s as scheduled
QUALIFICATIONS / REQUIREMENTS
Education:
- Completion of formal apprenticeship program with journeyman card or equivalent to 8 years’ experience
- Excellent time management skills with the ability to multi task and prioritize
- Excellent problem-solving skills such as 8D and 5 Whys
- Excellent communication skills as evidenced in colleague relations, team skills, and have the ability to interface directly with the customer to resolve issues
- Ability to work independently, self-starter with the ability to work in a fast-paced environment

Required experience:
- Tool and die maker: 4 years
- Rubber injection molding strongly preferred
- Plastic injection molding strongly preferred
- Familiarity with metric system
Required education:
High school or equivalent
