Position Overview: The Veterinary Assistant supports the hospital by providing dedicated quality veterinary care and extraordinary service to our patients and clients. As a Veterinary Assistant, you will fully assist the DVMs and RVTs to help improve the quality of care to the patients by relieving them of technical work and achieving greater efficiency at Animal Medical Center of Surprise.
Duties and Responsibilities:
- Assist in determining animal requirements by helping conduct animal examinations, restraining patients, reviewing care plans, and maintaining records
- Care for patients by taking vital signs, collecting samples, administering vaccines, providing wound care management, completing laboratory tests and diagnostic imaging
- Assembling required supplies and instruments for procedures
- Fill prescriptions and administer PO, SQ, IM, IV medications, including proper documentation, logging, and security of controlled drugs
- Maintain a safe, secure, healthy and humane environment by following documented standards and procedures in compliance with applicable legal regulations
- Provide timely meals to all hospitalized and/or boarding patients while ensuring correct dietary needs to each patient
- Ensure that cages and animals are properly identified and that personal property (toys, blankets, leashes) are stored and labeled in respectable areas
- Clean, disinfect and maintain hospital grounds as often as is necessary to ensure cleanliness and sanitation
- Complete upkeep tasks like cleaning food and water bowls, and maintaining laundry
- Demonstrate the ability to explain and educate clients on our services, procedures, and products
Qualifications and Skills:
- At least 2 years of experience performing above duties
- High School Diploma/GED
- Knowledge of pharmaceutical drugs and calculations
- Able to perform moderately physically demanding work, that requires lifting (up to 50 pounds), cleaning, and constant motion
- Ability to work with or around sick animals, potentially hazardous materials, cleaning chemicals, gas anesthetics, zoonotic diseases, and unpleasant odors
Available Schedule: Full-time position, must have a flexible schedule and be open to working weekends, we offer 10 hour shifts 4 days a week
