Our client, a construction company based out of Manhattan, NY. They are seeking a Financial Controller to join their team!

The Financial Controller will be responsible for overseeing all financial activities, including accounting, budgeting, and financial reporting for our construction projects. This role requires a detail-oriented, strategic thinker who can manage financial risks, ensure compliance with industry regulations, and provide leadership to the accounting team. The ideal Financial Controller candidate will have extensive experience in construction accounting, strong analytical skills, and a proven ability to drive financial performance.
- Financial Management: Oversee all accounting operations including Billing, A/R, A/P, GL, Cost Accounting, Inventory Accounting, and Revenue Recognition. Prepare and publish timely monthly financial statements. Coordinate the preparation of regulatory reporting
- Budgeting and Forecasting: Lead the annual budgeting process and track performance against the budget. Develop financial forecasts to support strategic planning and decision-making
- Compliance and Audit: Ensure compliance with GAAP, federal, state, and local legal requirements by researching existing and new legislation. Coordinate and manage annual audits and reviews, preparing necessary documentation and liaising with external auditors
- Project Accounting: Manage project accounting functions including job cost reporting, project profitability analysis, and WIP (Work In Progress) reporting. Ensure accurate and timely job cost tracking and reporting to project managers and senior management
- Internal Controls: Develop and document business processes and accounting policies to maintain and strengthen internal controls. Identify areas for process improvement and implement changes to increase efficiency and accuracy
- Team Leadership: Supervise and mentor the accounting team, providing guidance and professional development. Foster a collaborative and supportive work environment within the finance department
- Cash Management: Oversee cash flow planning and ensure availability of funds as needed. Maintain banking relationships and negotiate lines of credit and other financial instruments
- Financial Analysis: Provide financial analysis and decision support to senior management on strategic initiatives. Analyze financial data to identify trends, variances, and opportunities for cost reduction and efficiency improvements
- Systems and Process Improvement: Evaluate and enhance accounting systems and processes to improve accuracy, efficiency, and compliance. Stay current with industry trends and best practices in construction accounting
- Minimum of 7 years of progressive accounting experience, with at least 3 years in a construction environment
- Strong knowledge of GAAP, job cost accounting, and construction financial regulations
- Proficiency in accounting software (e.g., QuickBooks, Sage 300 Construction and Real Estate, Procore) and advanced Excel skills
- Demonstrated experience in financial reporting, budgeting, and audit coordination
- Excellent analytical, organizational, and problem-solving skills
- Strong communication and interpersonal skills, with the ability to work collaboratively across departments
- Bachelor’s degree in Accounting, Finance, or related field is required
- CPA is preferred
