SUMMARY:
The Director of Emergency Services is responsible for the continuous leadership of assigned patient care service areas. They develop and/or participate in the development of goals related to the delivery of nursing care, management of human resources, and fiscal planning for the Emergency Department.
RESPONSIBILITIES:
* Demonstrates expertise in communication and negotiation with all level of staff throughout the organization.
- Plans and participates in the recruitment and retention of professional and non-professional staff.
- Develops plans to meet staffing needs based on the knowledge, availability of resources, specific needs, and areas of responsibly and financial resources.
- Influences the development of organizational policies related to patients based on knowledge of the Nursing process, JCAHO standards, and all other state and federal regulations.
- Reviews outcome of work processes to determine compliance and effectiveness and initiate changes as needed to continually support quality improvement.
- Develops annual departmental budget based on utilization trends and goals and objectives of area of responsibility.
- Monitors the utilization of resources and ensures they are use/allocated efficiently.
- Participates in the development of goals and objectives to continue to monitor financial responsibilities.
- Provides leadership and supervision to ensure quality services are provided by a competent staff and that respect for employees is maintained for the Emergency Department.
- Responds promptly and courteously to patient, family members and staff requests.
- Participates in goals related to Patient Satisfaction.
- Adheres to policies related to release of information.
- Adheres to the Standard of Nursing as defined by the Georgia Nurse Practice Act.
- Maintains required competency levels and all other requirements for employment.
- Supports guest relation program by serving as a role model.
- Interacts with patients, families, visitors, employees, and physicians in a manner that is respectful of the person’s dignity and individuality as evidenced by observation.
- Demonstrates ability to use all channels of communication to address inter- and intra-departmental concerns, solve problems, and address conflicts.
- Actively participates in and supports hospital-wide functions and activities to improve morale among employees and promote the positive image of the hospital.
- Assesses needs and makes necessary adjustments to staffing to provide adequate coverage for the next shift to meet patient care needs.
- Makes staffing decisions within defined parameters and documents variances.
- Appropriately manages agency staffing, overtime utilizations, and premium pay shifts.
- Ensures that the staff are trained and evaluated on their knowledge of and adherence to compliance policies and procedures specific to their jobs.
- Maintains effective working relationships with all members of the staff through the cooperation and mutual respect displayed while interacting on an interdepartmental and multidisciplinary basis.
- Keeps abreast of all pertinent federal, state and facility regulations, laws and policies as they presently exist and as they change or are modified.
- Ensures that the staff are trained and evaluated on their knowledge of and adherence to compliance policies and procedures specific to their jobs.
- Demonstrates age-specific skills as required by position.
- Offers suggestions on ways to improve operations of department and reduce costs.
- Attends all mandatory education programs.
- Improves self-knowledge through voluntarily attending continuing education/certification classes.
- Maintains required competency levels as identified in written exams, skills checklists, skills labs, annual safety and health requirements as well as service excellence education hours requirements.
- Willing to cross-train in order to better assist co-workers and to provide maximum efficiency in department.
- Volunteers/participates on hospital committees, functions, and department projects.
- Manages resources effectively.
- Reports equipment in need of repair in order to extend life of equipment.
- Makes good use of time so as to not create needless overtime.
EDUCATION:
* Bachelor's Degree in Nursing
CREDENTIALS:
* Registered Nurse
OTHER INFORMATION:
* Three (3) years nursing experience in the emergency services, including previous supervisory experience.
* Master’s degree in nursing preferred.
