CULINARY INSTRUCTOR - MEN'S DIVISION
Recipe for Change is a 501(c)(3) non-profit organization providing mentoring and guidance to detainees in the jail and prison systems through culinary, fine arts and life skills training while reinforcing the value of work and personal responsibility. RFC is designed to give dignity and opportunity to the inmates of Cook County Jail through an introduction to healthy food, good nutrition and the art of cooking.
SCOPE AND RESPONSIBILITIES:
Reporting to the Operations Director, the Culinary Instructor for the Men's Division will teach culinary lessons, manage program documents, interview new participants and collaborate with the sheriff's office to maintain smooth daily operations and uphold professional standards in hospitality training for male detainees in the Cook County Department of Corrections. The program will screen and select 20-30 participants from the correctional facility to participate.
RESPONSIBILITIES INCLUDE BUT ARE NOT LIMITED TO:
- Deliver an exceptional cooking class experience for detainees under the direction of Chef Adriano
- Ensure high standards of sanitation and cleanliness are maintained throughout the kitchen and dining area
- Ensure efficient organization of program documents, reports and Excel-based operational data
- Daily lesson recipe planning, supply ordering and inventory management
- Create and update Excel spreadsheets to track expenses and student data collection
- Possess excellent verbal and written communication skills with employees, supervisors and CCDOC staff
- Create a positive learning environment that provides educational value and builds self-esteem
- Provide coaching in the moment and positive feedback to detainees
KEY SELECTION CRITERIA:
- Valid food handler’s license
- Comfortable operating a computer and competent using Google Suite, MS Word and Excel
- Minimum two years’ experience working in the culinary industry
- Two years of teaching experience in the culinary arts preferred
- Excellence in organizational management with the ability to supervise and mentor student detainees and interact well with Cook County staff
- Skills in problem solving with the ability to exercise sound judgement
- Manage multiple responsibilities and prioritize tasks in a fast-paced environment
- Possess a strong sense of compassion and patience with an interest in serving an underserved population
- Assist with hosting fundraising luncheons and donor events
- Become a ServSafe Certified Manager within 45 days of employment
- Highly recommended to be vaccinated for COVID and must wear masks when required inside the jail facility

Pay: From $24.00 per hour
Expected hours: No more than 40 per week
