Purpose:
In the Advanced Technology Laboratory’s (ATL) Special Warfare Division (SWD), we support and deliver the Navy’s most advanced undersea sensing and communications technologies.
This position will manage a team of software engineers and software QA staff tasked with creating and maintaining front-end data analysis software throughout its lifecycle. The employee will organize the software team, set high level system goals and strategies, ensure funding is available to support the team, and will be the primary external point of contact for high-level communications.
The software we are building includes operator-facing software for interacting with and reviewing data from commercial and Navy sensors. The employee will also be asked to lead an effort to improve our web-focused software tools for the division.
Responsibilities
- Supervises the team members
- Sets high level system goals and strategy
- Measures team execution, product quality metrics, and provides internal status
- Works with other Principal Investigators to ensure funding is available to support the team
- Primary external point of contact for high-level internal and external communications
- Other related functions as assigned.
Required Qualifications
- Bachelor’s degree in computer engineering, software engineering, engineering management, or related field
- At least three years of demonstrated experience in managing software teams
- Thorough understanding of software development and testing methodologies and techniques
- Possess working-level understanding of Linux operating systems and administration
- Ability to communicate with, lead, manage, and grow a software development team
- Ability to build good working relationships with people at all levels, and understand the needs of different stakeholders and communicate with them appropriately
Applicants will be expected to have a strong software engineering background to be able to effectively lead the software development and support team. Applicants should have a demonstrated capability to manage, organize, and develop a software team. There is a significant communication component to this position to interact with our customers, end-users, and the internal software team. Applicants should expect to travel in support of customer meetings and system development and demonstration events. Travel is expected to be <10% time, but may include some longer trips (2 weeks).
US Citizen. Applicant selected will be subject to a government security investigation and must meet eligibility requirements for access to classified information at the level appropriate to the project requirements of the position.
Preferred Qualifications
- Degree in software engineering or engineering management
- At least five years of demonstrated experience in software project management
- Demonstrated ability to program in C++, Python, or shell scripting
- Experience with high-frequency SONAR or other underwater sensor systems
- Familiarization with geographic information system concepts
- Prior military or defense system development experience
- Experience with Department of Defense acquisition processes
- Experience working with classified information systems
- Eligibility for immediate access to classified information.

Salary Range
$100,000-$140,000+/negotiable depending on qualifications.
