Registered Nurse Job Description:
PURPOSE
Under only administrative direction on assignments, provides professional-quality psychiatric, Addictions nursing services by assessing, educating, counseling, and supporting the mental and physical health needs of assigned client population groups; develops and coordinates clinical programs, and offers clinical leadership to less experienced members of division’s clinical staff.
ESSENTIAL JOB FUNCTIONS
- Provides clinically appropriate psychiatric, addictions, residential services to assigned population groups.
- Transcribes MD or APRN orders and obtains requested medical information relating to clients.
- Completes medication administration ensuring accurate prescribed dosage and timely delivery, educating clients in the management of side effects, and obtaining preauthorization of prescriptions/medications from the pharmacy.
- Maintains accurate & timely documentation, according to established standards for nursing practice.
- Manages a caseload of clients receiving only medication services, when required.
- Develops and maintains treatment planning and case reviews to determine medical treatment, including after-care plans for clients completing treatment.
- Attends and participates in staff meetings, treatment planning sessions, case conferences, supervisory meetings, and clinical seminars, providing information relating to the medical care of the client.
- Conducts case presentations and consultations with other agencies regarding programs and services offered, when requested.
- Consults and collaborates with external agents including CHR; school officials, family members, physicians, and other health agencies, regarding the organization’s programs and client needs and conditions.
- Ensures adequate laboratory supplies, medical equipment, and medications are available to meet service demands and replenishes stock on a timely basis.
- Administers pregnancy tests and drug screens on clients and documents results.
- Monitors medical equipment and testing per CLIA standards.
- Conducts emergency evaluations of high-risk clients to determine the level of treatment indicated and arranges for hospitalization, as needed.
- Provides medical leadership to clinical and business staff.
- Provides supervision, as requested, to LPN, CMA, CNA & CCMA team members.
- Manages medical clinics to maximize efficiency and create a positive experience for clients.

EDUCATION
- Kentucky Registered Nursing license.
EXPERIENCE
- Psychiatric, Addiction, DD or related nursing experience,
- Knowledge of nursing treatment and related issues, including mental and physical characteristics of the applicable population, human behavior, and community resources.
- Demonstrated competence in a range of nursing skills.
- Excellent interpersonal and communication skills.
- Strong leadership qualities and supervisory skills.
- Ability to manage a caseload with varying levels of client disability and need.
PHYSICAL DEMANDS/REQUIREMENTS
- Position has some unusual physical demands, including occasional exposure to threats of bodily harm from clients and their families.
- Normal tasks may involve routine but limited exposure to blood, body fluids, or tissue.
- Scheduling demands may require employees to be on “24-hour call” on a rotating basis.
- Reliable transportation for frequent travel between work sites.
Within the bounds of their respective job descriptions, all staff are expected to exercise principle-centered leadership, focused on customer service responsiveness, with a continuous quality improvement orientation.
Additionally, all staff is expected to develop a working knowledge of and follow all policies and procedures related to safety management and other Joint Commission standards.
REQUIRED SKILLS/COMPETENCIES
- Utilizes Nursing Process (Assess, diagnose, plan, implement, evaluate) during direct patient care interventions to treat and respond to patient health reports and symptoms
- Consistent review of patients’ allergies
- Knowledge of medication reconciliation processes
- If providing care to clients requiring administered medication demonstrates the ability to administer medication safely and in accordance with policies and procedures
- If serving at the site where medication is available follows medication protocols for tracking, storing, documenting, monitoring, and disposing of medication
- If providing care to clients at sites where there is self-administration of medication opportunity demonstrates the ability to assess for client’s competence to administer medication safely and in accordance with policies and procedures
- Obtains and monitors lab results, notifying the provider of out of range lab values, and explaining lab procedures to clients
- If SUD is primary, demonstrates knowledge of appropriate screening for psychoactive substance toxicity, intoxication, and withdrawal symptoms
ADDICTIONS / SUBSTANCE ABUSE
- Knowledge about substance use disorder behaviors and treatment protocols
- Understanding and utilizing Recovery Dynamics recovery in MAT
- Knowledge of signs/symptoms of psychoactive substance toxicity intoxication and withdrawal symptoms.
