Utility Plant Operator
Job Summary
Operates all equipment in the site’s utility plant at the Northrop Grumman facility in San Diego. Troubleshoots, tests, diagnoses, maintains, repairs, replaces components as needed, monitors and adjusts the system or equipment in the Central Utility Plant to ensure a fully functional and operational system. Regular work schedule is 6:30 am to 4:00 pm Tuesday through Saturday, Plant Schedule 9/80.
Job Duties include:
- Comply with Fluor and customer prescribed and published work rules, policies, procedures, and safety practices.
- Ensure proper operation of the electrical, boiler, air compressor, and chiller systems, as well as all other systems related to the facility.
- Monitor equipment and systems performance and makes required adjustments to maintain plant production within specified limits.
- Perform corrective and preventive maintenance as scheduled or warranted, including calibrations, water quality checks, lubrication, and chemical treatments.
- Accurately take and log gauge and meter readings.
- Maintain logbook and records of operating conditions and actions taken, including chemical treatments, logs equipment problems, and inform management of needed repairs.
- Perform functional/operational tests to evaluate equipment/systems capability and reliability.
- Respond to emergency situations, switching to back-up equipment or shutting down equipment as conditions warrant.
- Monitor site Building Automation Controls.
- Monitor alarms for equipment in the Central Utility Plant Control Room.
- Assist with other site maintenance duties, as needed.
Education/Experience requirements:
- High school graduate or GED required.
- Four (4) years experience as a Utility Plant Operator/Operating Engineer is preferred
- Must have knowledge of standard and specialized maintenance practices.
- Must have knowledge and experience of facilities systems (chilled water, compressed air, steam, domestic hot and cold water) and equipment (including HVAC, pumps, piping, valves, pneumatics, controls, motors, electrical up to 12,000 volts / 3 phase, heat exchangers, and air compressors).

Pay: $28.50 - $33.50 per hour
