Summary:
The Equestrian Manager assures that the Equestrian Department provides the highest level of service to our guests, that the horses are cared for in the most thoughtful and professional manner, that the Equestrian Team members are provided with a great working environment and the department has structure and guidance to keep wranglers and hands productive and working towards daily, weekly and long term goals The Equestrian Manager must ensure that the Equestrian Department is maximizing revenues to drive profitability to achieve budget.
Responsibilities:
- Optimizing the care for the horses including feeding, medications and medical visits, farrier visits, habitat cleanliness and functionality, and overall quality of environments.
- Operation and maintenance of farming machinery, equipment and equestrian facilities.
- Organizes, schedules and reviews the work of assigned staff to ensure maximum efficiency. Optimizes checklists for daily accountability.
- Lead the hiring process for Equestrian, conveying needs to HR, screening applications, interviewing, etc.
- Training and development of Equestrian Team. Coaches in a positive manner to ensure success through clear expectations and hands on demonstration coaching.
- Provides an annual Business Plan to assist in developing long-term and short-term plans for the department and recommendations for changes and improvements to be made in operations and staffing.
- Coordinates the use of the equestrian facilities for special events, communicating effectively with other departments to ensure success.
- Regularly inspects barns, fences, grounds and equipment to identify safety problems and initiates immediate maintenance measures. Participates on the Resort Safety Committee and embodies the need for 100% safe environments.
- Utilizes purchase orders for all supplies and equipment needed, ensuring that all purchasing procedures are followed without exception.
- Participates in acquiring annual hay needs through on-site hay production or purchasing from reliable hay sources. Conducts monthly hay inventories to monitor purchase/production needs of hay.
- Reinforcing the expectations of the wranglers including participation in horse evaluations, inventories, etc.
- Available for emergencies after hours
- Manages manure disposal routines and cultivation of organic composting.
- Pasture Management – rotation, maintenance, fencing, planting, electrical fencing
- Tack Management – repair, routine maintenance, and inventory of all saddles, bridles, harnesses, and other equipment.
- Back Forty/Ranch Barn Administrative – documentation and reporting of accidents (guest, staff, and livestock), daily trail ride sheets, communication boards, etc. within that facility.
- Understand (behavior, feeding, health) of horses.
- Able to push herd from pasture to pen on horseback. May also include walking, running or driving herd.
- Identify all horses by name and level. Provide monthly all horse disposition reports with the purpose of having all horses trained and able to work in a capacity that creates revenue for the resort.
- Identifies health issues including wounds (cuts, scrapes, punctures, etc.); illness (colic, founder, etc.) and lameness and reports to General Manager.
- Understands needs and can provide first aid to horses (cleaning wounds, injections both orally and intramuscular.)
- Communicates effectively with guests and staff.
- Knows all trails on property and can effectively communicate position of ride in case of emergency.
- Other duties and responsibilities as assigned in any areas of the resort
Qualifications:
- High school diploma or GED
- 5 years of successful experience handling horses in a large ranch environment
- 3 years of successful experience as an equestrian manager or supervisor in a large ranch environment
- Able to lift, throw and stack square hay bales (up to 50 pounds) on wagons, vehicles, barns and lofts.
- Able to horseback ride at walk, trot, canter, gallop.
- Able to communicate effectively and understand how to read budgets, forecasts, financial statements.
