JOB SUMMARY
The Safety/Quality Assurance Manager will develop and manage Safety and Quality Assurance programs including activities that will ensure compliance with company policies, food safety standards, government regulations, and industry best practices including OSHA, GMP and HACCP. The Safety/QA Manager will integrate safety, quality assurance and quality control into all functions and people.
Essential Duties and Responsibilities:
- Advises CEO on safety compliance concerns and preventative actions.
- Apply administrative and record-keeping processes to support the programs listed above
- Maintain environmental reports including SPCC
- Set up and conducts training.
- Develop, evaluate and upgrade safety programs.
- Plans and implements safety policies and procedures in compliance with local, state, and federal rules and regulations including Occupational Safety and Health Administration (OSHA) and Department of Transportation (DOT).
- Conducts post-accident investigation and prepares report identifying possible accident causes and hazards for use by company personnel and senior management.
- Develop and execute training programs that support the Company’s objectives with regard to quality and food safety
- Develops, maintains, validates and revises annually the Quality Program
- Ensures a good follow-up of non-conformities of the SQF Program by developing and putting in place realistic action plans.
- Establish manufacturing specifications, standards, protocols and procedures for quality control and new product development
- Excellent Computer, communication and training skills
- Facilitates monthly HACCP Committee meetings. Prepares agenda and minutes of the meeting
- Implement quality assurance programs that effectively monitor product manufacturing in a way that result in company compliance with regulatory SOP, GMP, HACCP, and SQF Level 2 standards for third party audit and customer product requirements
- Maintain current library for all GMPs, SOPs
- Maintains safety files and records
- Manage HACCP assessments and reassessments. Compose and edit HACCP plans and strategies for new products. Manage HACCP records and file maintenance
- Manages the HACCP system; Analyzes production steps to determine efficient control points based on the SQF 2000 system and revises them when changes are made.
- Manages the SQF program on an ongoing basis; Ensures that SQF rules are being respected rigorously by staff.
- Oversees the Quality process for the Company.
- Participate and contribute to continuous improvement of departmental SOPs.
- Participates in and assists the Operations Manager in food safety audits
- Performs safety surveys and inspections, prepares written reports of findings and recommendations for corrective or preventive measures where indicated and follows up to ensure measures have been implemented.
- Plans and implements training for employees in work site safety practices.
- Plans, organizes, directs, controls and evaluates training activities related to the Safe Quality Food (SQF) program.
- Prefer experience in OSHA and DOT regulatory requirements.
- Trains and supervises management employees that have a role in the SQF Program to ensure their good understanding of the rules and development as a team of the best control measures possible
- Performs other duties as assigned.
Education and Experience:
- Bachelor of Science degree (B.S.) in food technology from four-year college or university; and/or five years related experience and/or training; or equivalent combination of education and experience.
- Ability to read, analyze, and interpret general business periodicals, professional journals, technical procedures, or governmental regulations. Ability to write reports, business correspondence, and procedure manuals. Ability to effectively present information and respond to questions from groups of managers, clients, customers, and the general public.
- Must have acceptable current drivers license.
Knowledge, Skills and Abilities:
- Knows and understands the contents of the Policy Manual and Commitment Statement, and where to find the same
- Understands the Food Safety Manual and where to find the same
- Knows that policies exist with reference to production-related record keeping and where the same may be found
- Understand policies/standard operating procedures with respect to personnel practices regarding control of physical contaminants, cleaning and sanitation, waste management, and acts accordingly
- Knows that there are standard operating procedures for calibration of equipment, premises and equipment maintenance, and where the procedures may be found
- Knows that there is a Food Safety Plan including an HACCP plan and, if applicable, knows that there are critical control points and, if applicable, know how to apply control measures
- Understands our policies/verification schedule with respect to frequency and methods of verifying any food safety aspect
- Understands our policies regarding product identification and labeling rules, as well as product traceability and act accordingly when necessary
- Knows that policies exist regarding Incident Management and Recall and Food Security/Premises Security/Sabotage, and participate in establishing the same when appropriate
- Good leadership skills. Friendly, outgoing personality with strong verbal and written communication skills for dealing with customers, crew-members and vendors.
- Strong organizational and analytical skills are required.
- Basic computer skills that include the ability to send/receive email messages, post information to a database or spreadsheet, and perform basic word processing, bookkeeping, and/or data entry. Knowledge of Microsoft outlook/express, Excel and Word.
Physical and Mental Requirements:
- Moderate mental and visual attention to perform manual work, machine operations, set-ups, inspections and adjustments that require frequent decisions to detect and adjust for variance from proper operation
- Must be able to stand, walk and hear on a regular basis and talk frequently; Repetitive motion of hands and/or wrists in involved; must be able to finger, grasp, handle or feel product and materials. Must be able to reach with arms and/or hands, crouch, bend or kneel.
- Must be able to lift, move, push, pull, or otherwise exert in the performance of the job over 10 lbs and up to 50 lbs.
Work Environment
- Works 50% of the time on a computer and 50% on the manufacturing floor where there is heat and protection from weather conditions.
- Noise level is low to moderate.
