Position Overview
A Direct Support Professional is responsible for providing non-medical personal care support to the elderly and disabled in their activities as specified by the participants indiv support plan, in compliance with general precautions and according to the established policies, procedures and objectives of the organization.
Primary Responsibilities:
- Supports organization's mission by striving for excellence in all aspects of the job with a focus on positive interpersonal relationship with consumers
- The Direct Care Worker has the responsibility of reporting client related issues and changes to the home care agency as soon as the issue is identified.
- Provides personal care services as established in the consumers plan of care
- Communicates with patients and their families on a regular basis
- Submits required documentation as per agency policy and procedures
- Ensures compliance of agency infection control and safety policies
- Adheres to the organization's policy regarding absenteeism and appearance
- Performs functions including some or total assistance with the following:
- bathing of patient in the bed, the tub or in the shower
- Dressing;
- grooming, including care of hair, shaving and ordinary care of the nail's teeth and mouth;
- toileting; this may include assisting the patient on and off the bed-pan commode or toilet
- walking, beyond that provided by durable medical equipment within the home and outside the home;
- transferring from bed to chair or wheelchair,
- preparing of meals in accordance with modified diets, including Iow sugar, low fat, low salt and low residue diets
- Feeding
- administration of medication by the patient, including prompting the patient as to time, identifying the medication for the patient, bringing the medication and any necessary supplies or equipment to the patient, opening the container for the patient, positioning the patient for medication and administration, disposing of used supplies and materials and storing the medication properly;
- providing routine skin care
- Using medical supplies and equipment such as walkers and wheelchairs; and
- changing of simple dressings
- Observes, records and reports information about client's condition and home environment
- Recognizes emergencies and follows agency procedures appropriately
- Complies with agency confidential policies; demonstrates and understanding of patients' rights and maintains
- respect for patient privacy and personal property
- Recognizes and adheres to EVV Policy
- Perform other specific tasks related as assigned
Will Demonstrate the following Skills/Qualifications:
- Strong organizational skills that reflect ability to perform and prioritize multiple tasks seamlessly with excellent attention to detail
- Possesses the ability to read, write, and follow written and verbal directions and work with limited supervision.
- Demonstrates an accepting and therapeutic attitude towards the sick, disabled, and the elderly and possess the
- maturity to deal effectively with the demands of the job.
- Reflects a professional and positive attitude\
- Warm personality with strong communication skills
- Ability to work well under limited supervision.
Education/Experience Requirements
- Successful completion of a competency exam required
- High School diploma or GED preferred
- Healthcare experience preferred
- Experience as an office assistant or in a related field preferred.
- CNA: 1 year preferred
- Provide or obtain a current CPR certificate required
- TB test required
- Meets the requirements of federal and/or state criminal and child abuse background checks required.
Physical Demands & Environment
Primarily working indoors with client/customer contact; use of specific equipment as braces, bedpan, crutches, electrical bed, Hoyer lift, walker, wheelchair, household appliances, vacuum cleaner etc. Employees may be required to sit, bend, stoop, use the keyboard, see, talk, and hear. Ability to perform tasks involving physical activity, which may include heavy lifting and extensive bending and standing. Ability to deal effectively with stress.
