Job Summary:
A Site Safety and Health Officer (SSHO) is responsible for managing all aspects of safety on construction projects. Mastery and implementation of the EM-385 1-1 and OSHA standards
Reviewing the contractor's safety plan and ensuring compliance with local, state, and federal health and safety guidelines
Organizing weekly safety meetings with the entire project workforce, and conducting audits
Conducting daily safety and health inspections and maintaining a written log
Providing new employee safety orientation and ongoing job-specific safety training in accordance with EM-385 1-1 & OSHA regulations
Conduct site orientation meetings for new hires and subcontractors
Conducting accident and injury investigations and completing required reports and forms
Enforcing safe work practices and meeting with workers who have safety concerns
Overseeing the documentation and physical inspection phase of the workflow process, and maintaining applicable safety reference materials on the job site
Communicating with project management regarding compliance and safety, including providing feedback
A minimum of 5 years of experience as an SSHO
Duties:
· Identify hazards in the workplace
· Inspect and evaluate workplace environments, equipment, and practices for compliance with corporate and government health and safety standards and regulations.
· Investigate accidents and incidents to identify their causes and to determine how they might be prevented in the future.
· Conduct training on a variety of topics such as emergency preparedness.
· Inspect, test, and evaluate workplace environments, equipment, and practices to ensure they follow safety standards and government regulations.
· Work with others to fix hazardous and potentially hazardous conditions or equipment.
· Evaluate programs on workplace safety and health.
· Educate employers and workers about workplace safety.
· Demonstrate the correct use of safety equipment.
· Required to ensure ALL Construction activities and personnel adhere to all USACE EM 385 and OSHA safety requirements
· Conduct daily safety inspections with a written log
· Conduct mishap investigations and reports
· Maintain applicable safety reference materials on the jobsite
· Attend all meetings
· Produce, implement and enforce all approved Accident plans and Accident hazard
analysis for construction work
· Maintain, document and report all Hazardous chemicals on site
Certifications:
· 30 hour OSHA card (within 3 years)
· CPR and basic first aid
· Competent Person
· Fall protection training
· Scaffold training
· Trench and excavation training
· Confined space training and awareness
*All certifications must be current*
Important Qualities:
· Communication skills - must be able to communicate safety instructions and concerns to employees and managers.
· Detail-oriented - must pay attention to details and be able to recognize and adhere to safety standards and government regulations.
· Physical stamina - must be able to stand for long periods of time and be able to travel regularly.
· Problem-solving skills - must be able to find solutions to unsafe working conditions and environmental concerns in the workplace.
