Histological Technician
Under the supervision of the Practice Coordinator and Mohs Surgery Laboratory Director and with a thorough knowledge and theory of histological techniques, process and prepare high quality microscopic slides for medical diagnostic purposes. Prepare rapid frozen tissue specimens from human skin for Mohs surgery. Work in all areas of the Histology laboratory and perform these functions independently.
Essential Duties:
1. Under general supervision and according to policies and procedures, perform routine and non-routine activities involving in the preparation of slides for microscopic evaluation by Mohs surgeons.
2. Perform all necessary tasks in histology, processing, embedding, cutting, H&E staining, immunohistochemistry stains, and mounting.
3. Test for and ensure quality control of slides and specimens.
4. Perform daily setup, routine maintenance and cleaning of all equipment, and prepare laboratory reagents and chemicals as required.
5. Associate specimens with appropriate case or accession number and maintain detailed records of procedure and stored slides.
6. Perform routine Quality Assurance tests and coordinate referral of specimens to outside laboratories when indicated.
7. Ensure compliance with all local, federal and CLIA regulations.
8. Maintain a clean and well-organized work area.
9. Maintain a thorough understanding of technical and procedural aspects of the department.
10. Analyze and resolve problems independently as appropriate as noted by Mohs surgeon feedback and manager observation.
11. Assist with ordering and inventory of supplies for laboratory and Mohs surgery.
12. Prepare surgical instruments for Mohs surgery including use of autoclave and sterilization procedures.
13. Perform additional functions incidental to laboratory activities.
14. Demonstrate a strong sense of professional ethics and immediately bring to the attention of the manager or laboratory director suspected errors that might impact patient care.
15. Evaluate, implement, and practice new methodologies per department guidelines as noted by manager.
Required Skills and Abilities:
1. Ability to embed and section tissue and prepare high quality microscopic slides for diagnostic purposes in Mohs surgery.
2. Excellent manual dexterity.
3. Ability to work in fast-paced clinical environment, ability to work efficiently under time pressure.
4. Ability to work independently or with a team with limited supervision.
5. Ability to communicate effectively with Management, Mohs surgeons, and staff.
6. Excellent attendance and reliability.
Required Education and Training:
High school education and at least 3 years of histology laboratory experience, OR Associate’s degree and some histology laboratory experience, OR Bachelor’s degree in a related field.
