Orange County Animal Services is proud to be the municipal shelter serving Florida’s fifth most populous county. Orange County, Florida is home to approximately 1.5 million people and includes “The City Beautiful,” Orlando. Orange County Animal Services is a large and evolving animal welfare organization, with approximately 100 full-time employees and is aided by support networks of 450 volunteers, 400 foster parents and more than 80 local rescue groups. The mission of Animal Services is to protect both the people and pets of Orange County.
The shelter receives approximately 15,000 homeless pets annually and strives to find as many as possible appropriate placement. Animal Services staff comprises four distinct teams – an enforcement operations team responsible for upholding local law in regard to animal welfare, a kennel team that handles the intakes and day-to-day care for the hundreds of shelter guests, a clinic team that handles the medical care and spay/neuter surgeries for the shelter animals and a communications team, which facilitate reclaims, adoptions, rescue placements and foster arrangements.
Minimum Qualifications
Graduation from High School or equivalent and one year of experience working with the public.
6 months of veterinary clinic experience is preferred
General Functions
Animal Services is seeking a veterinary technician who will assist the veterinarians in ensuring shelter pets receive prompt and proper medical care and continued monitoring for individual health and welfare. Veterinary technicians handle a myriad of tasks and are essential to both the clinic team and overall shelter.
Representative Duties/Assignments
- Receives animals from clients and briefly checks the animals.
- Prepares the prep room prior to surgery, ensuring that the oxygen is on, vaccinations are drawn up, and diagnostic tests are ready.
- Prepares the surgery room and reviews the surgery list.
- Sedates and preps animals for surgery.
- Monitors animals before, during, and after surgery to ensure animal is recovering from anesthesia.
- Cleans and sanitizes the clinic area and surgical instruments.
- Medicates animals throughout the facility per veterinarians instructions. Administers treatments and performs procedures per veterinarians guidance.
- Release animals to their owners/fosters/adopters; educates owners/fosters/adopters on post-operative care, general husbandry, and relevant Division policies and procedures.
- Performs data entry to document veterinary care, communications among staff and owners/fosters/adopters, and any other pertinent info to ensure seamless quality of care and exceptional customer service.
- Supports the mission and vision of Animal Services.
- Performs other duties as assigned.
