The Herbert Wertheim School of Public Health and Human Longevity Science at UC San Diego (hwsph.ucsd.edu) is committed to academic excellence and diversity within the faculty, staff, and student body and invites applications for an Associate Professor rank faculty position in Health Equity with a research focus on African American communities and the Black Diaspora.
UC San Diego is forging a new paradigm for engagement and collaboration between STEM/Public Health/Health Sciences and the Social Sciences/Arts & Humanities. This faculty position is 1 of 13 Ladder Rank faculty positions that unite STEM/Public Health/Health Sciences departments and schools and Black Diaspora and African American Studies (BDAAS) through innovative research, coordinated teaching, and targeted service. Faculty will have multiple opportunities to engage with scholars across UC San Diego disciplines to address issues of race and racism, access and equity, and social and political influences focused on STEM/Public Health/Health Sciences, while also working within their home department/school and professional communities.
The HWSPH has focal areas of Biostatistics and Bioinformatics, Climate & Environmental Health, Community Health Services and Preventive Medicine, Epidemiology, Global Health, Health Behavior, Health Equity and Justice, Health Policy, Public Mental Health, and Technology & Precision Health and offers teaching and student mentoring opportunities in our BS in Public Health, MPH, PhD in Public Health (administered jointly with SDSU), and MS and PhD in Biostatistics degree programs. Further, the School has a Preventive Medicine Residency program. The School has extensive collaborations with the School of Medicine, Moores Cancer Center, Jacobs School of Engineering, Scripps Institution of Oceanography, Altman Clinical and Translational Research Institute, Rady School of Management, Skaggs School of Pharmacy, and with other partners across the UC San Diego campus. Partnerships with the community and health agencies are fundamental to the School. The School is comprised of more than 125 primary faculty and academics, 25 secondary faculty, and 200 staff members and provides instruction and mentorship to 700+ BSPH majors and 225 postgraduate students, and the School’s faculty and academics hold ~$125M total awarded grants and contracts.
Faculty holding these positions will be expected to design and teach an undergraduate course that aligns with the Black Diaspora and African American Studies program, e.g., an appropriate Health Equity course, and conduct research focused on African American communities and the Black Diaspora. They may also demonstrate the equivalent through service to BCAAS and by mentoring undergraduate students. We seek candidates who will conduct research advancing health for African American communities and the Black Diaspora. We welcome candidates whose professional experiences and personal backgrounds have facilitated their understanding of traditionally underrepresented racial minority communities. Faculty are expected to have an inclusive stance on mentoring and advising that incorporates working with women and underrepresented racial minority undergraduate and graduate students. Faculty will be encouraged to engage in interdisciplinary conversations and scholarship across UC San Diego disciplines.
The selected candidates will be responsible for research, teaching, and service, commensurate with the series of appointment and rank, including research that focuses on African American communities and the Black Diaspora.
Appointment will be at the Associate Professor rank and will be based on the candidate’s background and experience. The series will be 1.0 FTE Ladder Rank (Tenured).
