The Humane & Animal Control Dispatcher is responsible for providing quality customer-oriented phone service to residents and partner agencies in and around the service area of Inland Valley Humane Society & S.P.C.A. The dispatcher’s primary responsibility is to receive emergency and non-emergency animal control calls and relay service requests to officers and investigators in the field.
Essential Duties:

Answers all incoming animal control calls from the general public and other agencies such as local first responder agencies.

Evaluates, prioritizes, and assigns service calls to officers and investigators.

Operates various equipment – telephone, computer, two-way network radio, maps, shelter database, etc.

Enters and maintains accurate call data in shelter database.

Provides information and educates the general public on wildlife, animal care, etc.

Monitors and maintains records pertaining to service calls.

Offers administrative and clerical support to management, investigators, and officers.

Performs other duties as assigned.
Qualifications/Requirements:

High school diploma or equivalent qualification.

Minimum 1-year experience working in a shelter setting.
- Minimum 1-year experience working in a customer-oriented position.

Humane attitude towards animals.
-
Supports and represents IVHS & SPCA core values, programs, policies, and procedures.
- Must possess a valid driver’s license and clean driving record.
Preferred Qualifications:
-
Bilingual (English/Spanish/Mandarin) preferred.

3-5 years of experience working for a non-profit rescue group, humane society, municipal shelter, or other animal welfare agency preferred.

1-3 years of experience working as an animal control officer or dispatcher preferred.
Knowledge & Abilities:
-
Strong verbal communication skills with knowledge of telephone communications etiquette with the ability to de-escalate sensitive emergency situations.

Strong computer skills with the ability to utilize maps, Microsoft Office 365 (Word, Outlook, Excel), etc.

Ability to maintain patience, and professionalism during high-volume calls with ability to de-escalate difficult emergency situations.

Self-starter, self-motivated with the ability to prioritize multiple tasks and adapt to change in a fast-paced environment.

Ability to handle sensitive, confidential situations and offer conflict resolution.
-
Ability to manage the stressful and emotional aspects of the environment.
Physical Demands/Working Environment:
-
Work is performed in a setting within an animal shelter facility. Regular exposure to animal shelter conditions including odors, airborne particles, and animal fur/dander.

Must be able to:

Routinely lift 50 pounds and perform strenuous daily activities including, but not limited to lifting, carrying, reaching, stooping, squatting, cleaning, and bending.

Work at a computer for extended periods of time with repetitive typing, sitting, arm, and hand motion.

Work indoors and outdoors in a variety of weather conditions including extreme heat and cold.

Exposure to dogs, cats, and other animals of all sizes, temperaments, and medical status.

Regular movement about the campus to coordinate work.
