The University Health Center, University of Georgia is offering a full-time staff position for an Optometric Technician in our Vision Clinic. Reporting to the Vision Clinic Manager, the Optometric Technician provides support for the Optometrists and is responsible for gathering data pertaining to the patient’s visual status and performing preliminary testing on patients prior to examination by Optometrist.
Minimum Qualifications:
Requires technical knowledge in the field acquired through an apprenticeship, a 2-year degree, or professional certificate.
UHC Preferred:
· Experience in a Student Health Care environment.
· Bachelor’s degree in related field from an accredited college or university preferred.
· Certified Ophthalmic Assistant (COA) or Certified Ophthalmic Technician (COT) preferred.
· Certified by the National Contact Lens Examiners (NCLE) preferred.
· Three (3) years’ experience in a healthcare environment preferred.
Knowledge, Skills, Abilities, and/or Competencies:
· Competency with Electronic Medical Record (EMR) systems.
· Proficient using an auto refractor/keratometer and auto lensmeter.
· Proficient in contact lens training and lens care.
· Familiar with contact lens brands and parameters.
· Understanding of Current Procedural Terminology (CPT) within the eye care field.
· Ability to effectively and professionally communicate with other departments, clinicians and co-workers to resolve patient issues.
· Must possess strong customer service and communication skills, excellent verbal skills, computer skills, strong basic math skills, sales skills and possess the ability to handle multiple tasks with flexibility and attention to detail.
Physical Demands: Ability to lift and move heavy objects (up to 40 lbs.). Ability to lift, stoop, bend, and perform a variety of tasks requiring good manual dexterity. Ability to stand for long periods of time (4-8 hours). Must be able to see small objects clearly and discriminate color. Must be able to properly hear and transcribe phone orders. Must be able to operate all equipment required. Must be able to perform fine motor skills.
Impact and Influence: The Optometric Technician interacts, influences and collaborates with Vision Clinic providers and staff, UHC providers and staff, outside health care providers, student patients, parents, UGA faculty/staff, and many others in the typical process of providing care for patients.
